I agree that for a lot of Trek weapons were extremely underpowered, however I'm not sure if TWOK is the best example of this. During Khan's first attack he was trying to disable, not destroy, and the same seems to be true of Kirk in the later battle in the nebula. We know both phasers and photon torpedoes can be set to different levels of power...

In DS9 we saw a combined Romulan/Cardassian barrage obliterate 27% of a planet's crust with one volley, and later in Sacrifice of Angels we see phaser and photon torpedo strikes destroy huge sections of the hulls of the USS Sitak and the USS Majestic. In TOS the Enterprise was often mentioned as having the power to wipe out all cities and installations on major inhabited worlds.

 

During TOS timeframe wouldn't it be logical to assume Enemy's wouldn't have the slightest idea where the CC is anyway?

Even if they did, isn't there some sort of Rule of Engagement prohibiting shots at the Bridge, instead targeting for weapons or power within the Trek-Verse? Isn't it always just the rouge villains which break that rule? (If Nero is such a rouge then the designers could be in for a hard lesson, perhaps, and that could be the point)

I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.

 

Well, with the scanners even in TOS, they could lock onto where a starship's bridge was pretty easily, even if they weren't familiar with the design of the ship.

Starfleet, I'm sure, had rules about using deadly force only as a last resort, but we didn't really see Starfleet captains specifically ordering disabling shots until TNG and later. My guess would be that during TOS, the weapons were very powerful but not very refined, resulting in a kill more often than not.

Skyhaunter: I also dislike how in TOS the Ensigns had no rank braids. And your scheme is actually similar to the U.S. Navy rank scheme in the early to mid-19th century, because I believe there was no lt. cmdr. rank then, so full captains had only three one-inch braids. As you may recall, the pips in TNG and the other 24th century shows bore more similarity to modern navy ranks, e.g., four solid pips = four sleeve braids. -- RR

 

Agreed. Comments like this tend to make Abrams sound very arrogant. Fans were up in arms when B&B were saying things like this when ENT premiered, yet Abrams gets a 'get out of jail free' card? Werid.

 

Richard Donner? You've got to be kidding. I'm onto you now.

 

The real question with Donner is: what was the guy's greatest accomplishment, Making SUPERMAN, or getting ANY other gig after THE BANANA SPLITS TV series? (and you can't mention THE OMEN as an accomplishment, it's a wreck, it was ALWAYS a wreck.)

 

The Omen at least got Jerry Goldsmith his (one and only) Oscar.

I'm as big a Goldsmith booster as you're likely to find, but even so, I think his OMEN score is very nearly a ripoff (a word I usually only reserve for Horner and Horner-like decomposers) of John Barry's wonderful THE LION IN WINTER.

They owed JG for PATTON and THE WIND & THE LION and probably THE BLUE MAX and PLANET OF THE APES, and later on he probably should have won for TMP as well.

plus the fact that the evidence is already on that picture with the floating touch screen controls over to the side, one saying B4 even.

 

The evidence we are lacking is the one that establishes the ability of people outside to see in through this thing. Until we get that, this isn't a window yet. It could still be a simple TV screen, with no corresponding opening on the outer surface.

And he apparently considers Star Wars--which is downright juvenile compared to Star Trek, which is itself adolescent--the standard to which he should aspire. I could see this kind of talk coming from someone who seeks to emulate the giants of litSF--the Stanislaw Lems, the Frank Herberts, the Arthur C. Clarkes, the Kim Stanley Robinsons or William Gibsons--but from this guy? Looks like the chimps are winding up for the pitch. I suggest we duck.

 

Gene Roddenberry and Robert Wise were quite open about their MediaSF inspiration when the latter signed on to direct ST:TMP:



Their reach may have to a certain extent exceeded their grasp, but in the immediate terrible aftermath of the Star Wars disaster Roddenberry & Wise at the very least attempted to keep Star Trek in contact with its conceptual and stylistic roots.

The rank system was actually amended for ST:TMP. They did away with the Lt(Jg) rank and gave ensigns the broken gold stripe, they also gave CPOs square and POs triangle insignia.
After this they redesigned the uniforms and insignia and had proper rank insignia for officers and ratings.
