We know the Enterprise spent months in repairs after Hegemony in 2261. If Leila never shows up, she likely met Spock offscreen on Earth during this timeframe while he was pining for Chapel.

I literally said this four posts ago.

Enterprise was at Starbase 1 in the Sol System (in Jupiter orbit per “Strange New Worlds”) for three months during the first part of 2261 (“Wedding Bell Blues”). Spock and Chapel were broken up at the time. Spock went to Earth on leave, met Kalomi, rejected her, came back to Starbase 1.

Consider canon saved.

Those three months he spent pining for Chapel would certainly account for him being incapable of expressing interest in anyone else.

You could say that for most non-main TOS characters as they usually only showed up in 1 episode. If the writers had done something completely different for Star Trek 2, you'd have to look up who Khan is.

It would seem to be one sided.

With that dialogue exchange, it's pretty clear that Spock's gone through his move to drop his emotional experimentations by the time he meets Leila.

EDIT: Actually Detached Nacelle and Campe make a good argument for how it could fit in between episodes.

It occurred to me that having a radiation resistant Number One around would've been REALLY helpful at the Battle of the Mutara Nebula.
