Well to answer your last question, I want more explore new worlds! Especially as modern Trek seems to be quite allergic to it.
That said a Division 12 show I think could be interesting. And in such cases they'd be better off not calling it Star Trek. When they force too much divergence under the Star Trek banner it leads to brand erosion and confusion. But if you could pitch it as 'from the universe of Star Trek', it changes things a lot. I know some people won't see the distinction here, but it does matter from a brand perspective.
That's irrelevant to liking or disliking the concept. And Commander K clearly prefaced saying that the knew it wasn't like to happen.
A better story than PIC Season 2, but that's the lowest of bars to clear.
I think there are various reasons for this.
During what might be considered the "early period" of Kurtzman Trek, there was an excessive focus on serialized plotlines. Planet of the week doesn't work too well with this, though we did see a few of these in early seasons of Discovery, for example.
More recently, I think they've clearly decided that Star Trek fandom wants stories about Star Trek, not original sci-fi stories which happen to take place in the Star Trek universe. Why give us an entirely original episode when they can give us an "I understand that reference?"
One thing which makes time travel/holodeck episodes attractive is the ability to use materials, props, costumes, etc. from other works, or use a modern day street without futuristic set dressing/CGI added buildings.
Discovery tried too hard to be "prestige TV" instead of just being star trek.
Had to have a hook now that they were expecting people to pay to watch Star Trek on TV.
I don't think anyone had any real idea what they wanted Discovery to be, once Fuller was shitcanned, but the network had plowed enough money into the show that they forced it to continue zombie-like rather than just pulping it and starting again with an entirely new Trek concept.
Really though, there's nothing much "prestige" about early DIS. Indeed, was really hoping it would be - that like a show like Breaking Bad or Mad Men we'd get a deep dive into a flawed protagonist. Instead, the writing was very much plot-based from the getgo, with the characters bending to serve it.

I was really turned off by the whole thing when Riker and Troi let their kid die due to the AI ban. That just wasn't the Riker and Troi I knew. People who never gave up despite the odds.
That is the entirety of Picard in a nutshell for me.

And Star Trek is not prestige. It has gotten a perception of high class vibe from TNG, but it is action adventure at its core and needs to look at that not prestige.
Picard's first season was just a huge fucking mess because they wanted to do the Romulan refugee crisis and the synth ban and the XBs. Just way too much story for a 10-episode arc, which is why a lot of the threads just got abandoned.
In contrast, Season 2 didn't have anywhere near enough story to last through a season. Indeed, SNW basically did the same thing in Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and it worked so much better.
In Season 3, Picard finally figured out pacing, but the scripting was dumb as rocks, and the plot itself was just fanwank.
Yeah, I don't need Star Trek to be a David Lynch or Spielberg series and be advertised like it's dropping on AMC in 2011. I know what Trek is, what it used to be and what I expect from it, and I don't need shiny, expensive wrapping paper on a present I know isn't Gucci or Rolex.
I mean, I think Star Trek should aim for prestige from time to time. The most acclaimed episodes of TOS, TNG, and DS9 are almost all character dramas, after all, not pew-pew.
Probably where we agree to disagree. I dropped out halfway through because it was a slog.
It should aim to be relatable people who deal with crises well not prestige or any other label. Just do your job well.
