Here's a helpful guide to anyone wondering what the terms 'nostalgia' and 'fan service' mean in the context of Star Trek:
'Smart use of continuity' - When an episode references something from the last few years.
'Shameless fan-pleasing nostalgia' - When an episode references something from longer than a few years ago.
It all depends on how well it's executed. Those definitions can easily be switched around depending on the content.
Was Wrath of Khan 'Shameless fan-pleasing nostalgia'?
It doesn't really seem to matter in some cases. If Discovery or Academy do it it's bad regardless according to the usual types.
Or Picard, or Lower Decks.
The short answer is it depends.
The easy answer is "If I like it it's good and if I don't it's lazy, and disrespectful and bad."

Well now you will get it with a AI de-aged Sylvester Stallone. Complete with Sydney Sweeney as a romantic interest and a young Ronald Reagan as the mean local cop who wants to harass him.

You haven't experienced Apocalypse Now until you get to hook into the Holodeck VR experience and assume the role of Captain Willard and interact with all the other characters as if you were really in the movie. Has everything to offer. Shoot'em ups with the Viet Cong. Holo sex with the dancing girls and fine dinning at the French Plantation. Not to mention the psychedelic boat trip. You then get to choose a new ending. Want something more upbeat were you team up Marlon Brando to end the Vietnam War? Whatever ending you want, you get.
