Spoilers Starfleet Academy Episode Preview Thread

Reno and Tilly don't count as "legacy characters" as they were introduced in one of the modern shows. The term "legacy era" only applies to the shows and movies from 1966-2005.

Never heard of it termed as such.

As it is, just going from Disco, Admiral Vance was already a bit too hands-on for Starfleet CinC. SFA is just continuing the precedent established there. Which to be fair, is a common trope in fiction whenever we see the head of an organization like this on a regular or recurring basis, they end up becoming a lot more hands-on than someone in their position should be.

To be fair, Starfleet was much much smaller than previously seen, so Vance is likely as active as a Fleet Admiral would have been c. TNG/DS9.

Ugh… I’m not a hater of Academy. I’ve actually enjoyed most of the series so far, but her in this trailer… she’s like nails on a chalkboard.
Well, I guess it is about time for another one of Trek's writer commentary episodes.

I'm laughing my whole way through. This will be fun.

A little later than usual.

Yup, looks like Tarima is in the Academy now.

By God, the usual suspects will be apoplectic over this episode.

The Doctor appears to be crying. My poor, poor canon! (Yawn)

Seriously though, while the answer is mostly "who cares?" I have always wondered why the Doctor has most of his facial expressions, which correlate with his emotions/reactions. I could see that is not a good design choice, if the purpose of his original programming having a personality at all was to give the patient a sense of ease. Nothing less reassuring than the Doctor looking surprised or scared.

The Doctors physical form was created by scanning Doctor Zimmerman, there was no design choice involved in his physical capabilities and appearance other then that.

Drew the short straw I guess.
More seriously, why can't she? Maybe she did theater as a kid?
Because it's an extraordinarily involved subject and her schooling is 900 years out of date.

Truthfully, improv acting is probably one of the more important classes for a Starfleet Cadet because of how important the skill is for away missions. So you absolutely do not want anything less then the professionally trained best.

I can't take this post seriously,

That's kind of ridiculous of a statement. Zimmerman's appearance mapped onto a holographic frame, maybe is that simple, but the aspects of his personality, every blink or twitch, every raised voice or whisper, every shake of the head would have to be programmed. If we think of the Doctor as like a modern LLM, with the added layer of body language and tone, every movement would be calculated as to the probability of its having a preferred medical response (in this case having a good bedside manner to promote healing). Even if poorly done, it would all be extremely complex programming, given how much more advanced the Doctor is. If I am at all understanding the computer science.

Of course, if the Doctor had a preexisting "soul" that was copied from Zimmerman and transcendentally imparted body language to the holographic output, I guess then it's just that. Star Trek A.I. does seem to have a magical quality.

I'm sure we saw the Doctor cry at least once in Voyager. Maybe in 'Real Life', or 'Latent Image'?

Or at the very least get extremely sad.

It's also been 800 years since Voyager, maybe his program has had upgrades.
