Spoilers Starfleet Academy Episode Preview Thread

I understand what you're getting at here, but theatre isn't the same as cinema or even TV. Sets are much more rudimentary, the camera doesn't exist, most of the audience can barely see the faces of the performers, etc. Everything has to be based on dialogue (and, if not that, monologue).

Even with that, I'd say that while Shakespeare has characters spend quite a good deal of time talking about their feelings, they're not straightforward. All of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies, from Romeo and Juliet to Othello to MacBeth to King Lear, are based upon miscommunication.
I would agree but my whole ambition is for straightforward communication. So, if I'm to treat Star Trek as the future people bring straightforward is high on my list of wants in a show.

Sadly, Trek fails at that and other shows do it far better.

From what I can work out, the crew of Discovery:
- fought in a Klingon War
- were involuntary transported to a mirror universe, and returned back to Prime 8 months late to a defeated Federation
- Had a traitor / imposter captain in their midst
- Had to space a member of their own bridge crew
- Had a crew member who was an undercover Klingon who killed their doctor.
- Had to defeat a sentient AI which was fairly limitless in its abilities
- Travelled into a dystopian future leaving their families behind
- Has had 2 colleagues so far return from the dead.
- Have an evil Space Hitler duplicate version of an exalted captain that several of them served under
- Found the source of the Burn. prevented a planet-crushing shockwave by travelling to negotiate with a species that was more different than almost any other seen before, and went on a treasure hunt to stop a postentially galaxy-altering technology from ending up in dodgy hands.

I'd want a therapist to be honest.

To my mind, the issue with the "therapy speak" wasn't so much that the characters all wanted to vent, but that whoever they talked to was a perfect listener who validated their feelings.

Would've been much better if occasionally Stamets was like "I'm sorry, I'm too busy to deal with your shit right now."

The only "bad friend" on the show was Georgiou, which is why the show got so much blander after Season 3. Sometimes, you need a turd in the punchbowl.

From the moment Michelle Paradise took over on Discovery, it became one big emotional crap fest. It was jarring and annoying having characters, who were supposed to be professionals, started talking about their feelings in ready rooms, turbo lifts and what not, in the middle of a battle or during an intense clock that was ticking. Professionals do talk about these things, but afterwards, not during. The whole thing became laughable and ridiculous, even for a sci-fi show.

IMO, an important aspect of writing natural dialogue - which Trek never is, even something like SFA - is that real people talk about absolutely everything other than what they're actually feeling.

And when someone does express unfiltered emotion, the reactions of others are unpredictable.

I for one have never been bothered by DSC's display of emotions, quite the opposite. I think it set DSC apart in a positive way.. I've always felt Berman-Trek was quite distant and cold sometimes, and we'd have a very emotional episode like 'Hard Time' and next week it was like it never happened, even though DS9 had several arcs... DSC was a fresh breath of air imo

Haven't seen a trailer or screencaps for this weeks episode.
They released the usual round of stills on Instagram and on TrekCore a couple of days ago …

EDIT: As you already posted back here.

But yes, no episode trailer this time around for whatever reason. They posted the “rest of the season” trailer after last week’s episode. Maybe that’s supposed to count as enough previewing?

Ugh… I’m not a hater of Academy. I’ve actually enjoyed most of the series so far, but her in this trailer… she’s like nails on a chalkboard.

Oh, we do love a bit of Tilly

It is a rather bland clip imo. Not sure how this clip is supposed to get fans excited since we already knew Tilly was coming back. Now perhaps they don't want to spoil that Tilly does something more interesting in the episode because I certainly hope this is not the end all be all of her cameo, to talk about theater. I feel like nuTrek does this alot, posting clips or preview images that reveal absolutely nothing.

I really don’t like that they brought back so many legacy characters. Reno, Dax, The Doctor, and Tilly don’t add anything. I can kind of accept Vance being there, but even that feels like a stretch. Why is the commander-in-chief of Starfleet so involved with the Academy? Aren’t there other admirals who could handle that?

I’m really disappointed. Sure, the episode—and Tilly’s appearance—might turn out fine. But the Academy and its cast were more than capable of standing on their own. There was absolutely no need to shoehorn in so many old characters the way they did.

Reno and Tilly don't count as "legacy characters" as they were introduced in one of the modern shows. The term "legacy era" only applies to the shows and movies from 1966-2005.

As it is, just going from Disco, Admiral Vance was already a bit too hands-on for Starfleet CinC. SFA is just continuing the precedent established there. Which to be fair, is a common trope in fiction whenever we see the head of an organization like this on a regular or recurring basis, they end up becoming a lot more hands-on than someone in their position should be.
