It can be to do with environment, my job involves talking to people almost constantly but I would absolutely hate to be put on a podium and "perform" for people. In Jay-Dens case, you've got classroom versus podium - and even in the former you could tell there was a struggle for him.

“I saw a study that said speaking in front of a crowd is considered the number one fear of the average person. Number two was death. This means to the average person, if you have to be at a funeral, you would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy.”
— Jerry Seinfeld

Enjoyed the episode, pleasantly surprised by the series as a whole. Warp Slug didn't trouble me, just assumed that was the jazzy nickname they gave it rather than it actually being able to give a starship a run for its money. Probably less of a mouthful than 'False Subspace Folding Phase Gastropod'.

If anything bothered me it's that Darem was quite passive in the resolution of his arc. It seems to have cropped up a number of times in shows I've watched recently - A character has to make a difficult choice with lasting repercussions, but before they act another characters actions start a different set of events in motion and they avoid having to make the difficult choice. It would have been more powerful if Darem had made the decision, rather than his bride doing the work for him.

This one was a seven. Change of pace, character driven episode. The wedding played out in the usual Trek manner and nobody got hitched, Genesis despite her bravado has insecurities. Darem is free to be an asshole.
They did get married, it'll just get a quicky divorce.

Also it may be evidence of my bad brain but when Darem said it was called a sealing my brain went straight to ceiling and was very confused.

I think setting so far in the future was a bit of a mistake.

It's the 31st Century and the PADDS they use look like they could've come from a few years later than TNG.

And the suitcase and the mop look as if they could've come straight from Amazon! (yes I know Kirk had a regular suitase on TOS, but still!)

I want them to confirm that technology is worse than in the 24th century.

It was kinda odd they left an entire thirty deck starship parked in San Francisco with the intention only Reno would be inboard. You would have imagined they would have retained some sort of broader skeleton crew.

I am starting to wonder. Their first semester is over.
When will Caleb commit to a department branch?
And what do you think it’s going to be?
Despite or maybe because he is such a troublemaker and really good with all those hacking skills, and because he is super buff, I think he would thrive in Security.
I do not see him in command really.
Caleb's absolutely headed to Command.

Truthfully, I'd say he's the only one of the group that gives off the "Future Captain" vibe.

And yes, that includes Genesis, who really seems more like a career First Officer at this point.

I want them to confirm that technology is worse than in the 24th century.
But they've already confirmed it's not! :rommie:

I thought the episode was generally average but gave an interesting insight into Darem's psyche that felt more revealing than the Genesis plot, which felt like a surface scrape to explain her over-achieving.

If Darem is normally passive, in his fiancée's shadow, and bound by duty, on his homeworld. How much of his 'asshole' personality has been deliberately manufactured by him as a way to take control at the Academy, possibly as protective armour to resist being forced into a beta role?

He looks annoyed or perhaps hurt or even worried that Jay-Den has talked about his personal life to Kyle, and he doubles down quickly to re-assert his fake personality. He claimed in epidode 2(?) that his arranged marriage was a disaster because he shagged the whole family, but this now looks very much like a fake story to make him sound cool.

This is the first episode where his antipathy towards Kyle looked like it might be rooted more in jealousy than team rivalry. I rather like Kyle but he's given about as much development as the Delaney Twins. In a love triangle, he won't stand a chance. George Hawkins' micro-expressions during their interactions might have just been intended to show cracks in his mask or something more. I don't think I'm in a rush to see them dive into this. Heated Rivalry this isn't.

I do think there is a bit too much elitism in the show, alongside the New Mutants vibe where everyone has special powers. There are basically only 2 working class kids out of the 8 main recurring student characters, which feels an odd message for Star Trek.

I think youre thinking of the locker room scene in 1x03, but he doesn't mention his engagement, just that his parents didn't think he was a good match with the boy he had hooked up with.

That was a cute little episode, I liked it. Seems I prefer the character driven episodes, as last weeks action/suspense plot did little for me.

It's far from groundbreaking, but it was really nice to watch. 7/10, I guess.

Sci-Fanatics' review hit a lot of marks for me. Allow me to echo:
Bottle episode with out-of-place present-day equipment like travel trolley and mops.
Planetary royal wedding but few guests and everyone stays in Human form? Marrying on a desert moon instead of their moist homeworld?
Missed opportunity to see the Dar-Sha homeworld.
Missed opportunity for Cadet Mir to see an outside perspective from the host family.
