"While our cadets compete to join an elite team at the Academy, a battle of escalating pranks breaks out between Starfleet Academy and a rival school. Tensions rise fast, threatening their newly-emerging bonds and a blossoming romance." - TrekCore.com

Did they just say Starfleet's Mascot was a Koala type figure. So the god of the Cosmos was Starfleet's Mascot? That's hilarious.

Oh dear, I need to talk about...
  • "What is GOING ON in this episode?" Did I miss a bunch of exposition?
  • Is the War College on Earth? In San Fransisco? In the Starfleet Academy building? Why are they training together?
  • Is "daddy issues" a thing in the future? Wouldn't it be parent issues?
  • How does SAM get wet as a being made out of solid light?
  • Isn't the transporter prank grounds for expulsion? Certainly, demerits?
  • Starfleet Academy does COMMERCIALS? Isn't it something they've always had too MANY applicants for?
  • Lura Thok hates him because he likes...tea? Did I hear that right? You hate Picard?
  • Oh, so Darem is bisexual. Okay, cool. That's not bad as an addition.
  • Laser Tag is a thing in the 32nd century?
  • Targs are cute? That seems like a Lura line.
  • Mascots seem like a very Earth and Earth America trait. I'm surprised we didn't have cheerleaders.
  • Tilly is a horrible influence. I assume she's the reason they all have foul mouths.
  • Okay, they ARE sharing the same building. Was the War College already occupying Starfleet Academy grounds and they just opened it up again?
  • I don't find the man's tea habit at all weird. He just has a hobby he takes seriously.
  • "I don't have a problem with kids being kids." Are you not training them to be officers in the Hellscape Post-Apocalypse Galaxy?
  • Genesis really seems the only one seems like she could actually be a Starfleet officer.
  • Lots and lots of Rollerball/Quidditch/Hunger Games this episode.
  • Captain Ake's rousing speech is...uh. I have no idea what she was saying when she was talking to them after the big match.
  • Jet Reno is actually a really good teacher and feels like she could actually be in Starfleet Academy.
  • Lura and Jet are together? Okay. Cool.
  • Her advice is also good about not chasing absentee parents is good. Mind you, Caleb would sock her for it.
  • How did the Mugatto become an iconic animal? Did it get off "A Private Little War" planet to the one from Lower Decks to become a galactic phenomenon? I have so many questions.
  • Again, WHY are the War College and Starfleet Academy in the same building? Is this Harry Potter.
  • The War College clearly ISNT as disciplined as Tarima claims it is because they're allowing this nonsensical prank war.
  • I think the plant "prank" would qualify as criminal assault anywhere but Hogwarts. Especially involving an endangered species.
  • Why does Starfleet have Letterman Jackets? Is it a high school?
  • The Holly Hunter bare feet focus invites me to think Quentin Tarantino would like this show.
  • My wife decided this episode was meant to be watched with her special brownies.

I didn't like this episode at all, but I still gave it a 4. I feel like an episode like this should have come later, maybe even Season 2. Then we can see what Starfleet Academy is like instead of getting a first impression that it's a circus. I also found it really mean spirited too, and I don't really want that in a Star Trek series. I don't even think Take Me Out To The Holosuite was that mean spirited, which is what I kind of compared this episode to. I was ready to give it a 3, but the ending where Acke was talking about the Academy approach and ways to end wars did help the episode a little. It's just I'm not really sure if I want this kind of tone in a Star Trek series.

Also, I hate bare feet so seeing Acke's bare feet all the time kind of grosses me out. And I will say it even though I know I might get some flack for it. The swearing this episode really is a bit over the top. It actually started to become a distraction.

I'm still giving the series a shot, but it was episodes like this I was fearful of coming in. This felt like a CW episode and I hope we get back onto the Athena soon and we can get the Mobile Academy back and there will be some "Star Trek" in this Star Trek series.

I enjoyed this one less then the last two episodes.

I guess this is what I initially expected Academy to be, introspective on the Academy, whereas the last two Episodes used the Academy as a tool to teach us - no pun intended - about the Star Trek Universe in large.

No sir, this isn't what I want out of Starfleet Academy.

Even more than Episode 2, this leans very heavily into YA tropes, to the point that across big sections of the runtime it just felt like the Trek elements were a thin coating of paint smeared over the show. It also really lacked the "adult side" of the last episode, so if you're not into embarrassing youth antics, there's really not much here.

I will say there's a strong bright side, which is everything to do with Darem. This episode is essentially his character introduction. He gives opening and closing monologues, and goes on a coherent arc, from total jerk to slightly less jerky. Genesis has a big spotlight too, but mostly serves as his foil, as once again she's shown as the "perfect" cadet who contrasts with the huge flaws of everyone else.

In theory, I think having a lower-stakes episode makes total sense, given the setting. However, I just don't think starting with a sports/pranking episode is necessarily the best foot forward to place the show on. Look, I understand - fun-loving, rule-breaking jocks are probably more popular with general audiences then mega-nerds, but this is Star Trek, and frankly the kids showed less maturity here than what I remember from when I was a college freshmen. Felt more high-school coded than anything.

The stuff with Ake was confusing, even at the end where the conversation with Caleb was meant to elucidate it all. Whereas the first two episodes showed her as a bit eccentric, but competent, here she comes across as more of a joke than a mentor. The end salvaged it a bit, but just enough to not ruin her character for later episodes - not enough to make her vague advice actually sensical here. Turning to the other adults, while it was sweet to see Thok and Reno were a couple, the whole drill sergeant thing is getting a bit tired, and I hope she gets a bit toned down soon.

I do like the messages the episode closed on, and can appreciate the effort to try and launder a bit of the Trekkian spirit to a generic YA audience - supposing any of the generic YA audience this show is looking for showed up. But it's still a miss for me. Thankfully, if the advanced reviews are anything to go by, the next two will be less YA and more Star Trek.
