What I mean is, it's not new.
I didn't say new, I said current. And it's ubiquitous, at least in my experience in a way I don't see with a lot of older people. I mean, bro and dude aren't new either, but reflect a lot of modern use in certain circles.

But then again, I say "Oh my stars and garters!" all the time, so what do I know?

Groovy.

Some of the bro stuff sounds modern, but spending a lot of time with college students lately the TV show characters barely use current slang. I can't recall even hearing "it's giving" or "low key" on the show.
No cap as non native speaker all slang sounds sus or straight up delulu, weather it's real, from a decade ago, or fictional. So I don't even cringe there, just tryna vibe with it.

One thing I’m unclear on: the USS Athena is also Starfleet Academy. Is it also the War College, or is that a separate facility (sharing the Earthside campus) entirely?
They apparently are right next door

On top of that, was that American Sign Language? If he’s signing, shouldn’t it be Betazoid sign language?
Riva in Loud as a Whisper also used ASL, and Data had to learn it to be able to communicate with him after his telepathic chorus was killed. He then taught it to the opposing sides on that planet to give them a commonality. Maybe it spread from there to become the universal sign language in the Federation ;)

And why are some of the Federation’s most important negotiations happening at Starfleet Academy instead of something like a proper Federation Council chamber?
The council chamber was much smaller (see Disco S4)

Also, the Exo-Comp made me think of Peanut Hamper before she went Rouge, so thanks for the references to animated trek writing team.
All I could think of when the red Exocomp was on screen was, "Peanut Hamper!!"
And Peanut Hamber was in science blue, so this red Almond Basket is in the command division! Will we see a golden Walnut Jar next? :D

Tarima is at the War College, Ocam is in Starfleet.
To find the simplest solution, just use his razor.

So this will be the first time in Federation history the seat of government won't be on Earth. Best twist of the entire episode. A solid 8.
It wasn't on Earth since they left between the burn and Disco S3

Remind me… none of these characters were part of the cadet group Tilly spent some time with on Discovery, right?
They most likely graduated. In Discovery season 4 finale Tilly tells them they're no longer cadets, it was probably in the metaphorical sense but their commission was likely accelerated for their service like Nog's was.

If it wasn't for Reno being part of the main cast, one could easily argue that this is series starts during DIS Season 3 or something.
