Didn't the Exocomp look almost exactly like the earlier live action version?
In TNG? The bright colours and smooth lines made it seem more "cartoony" - think SD vs HD also plays a part

I might be wrong but the musical sting when the Betazed President chooses to rejoin sounded like it took influence from Jupiter (From Holst's Planets suite - and the music behind I Vow to Thee My Country which as a cellist was a really fun, beautiful piece to play)

I didn't like this episode as much as the first, but important things did happen in it, and that made it more tolerable. I did like the use of the Betazoids in this episode.

My biggest quibbles:

-The FX weren't as good to me in this episode. The Brikar, exocomp, and DOTs stood out and not in a good way.
-The Ake-Caleb relationship is already starting to feel repetitive.
-Where is the Federation president or Council to negotiate with Betazed? I think they should've made Vance the Federation president.
-The Doctor's musical performance went on too long.
-The use of contemporary language, especially from Caleb's new roommate, was a bit grating.

I thought this episode was weaker than the premiere, but I liked it more... if that makes any sense?

The negatives: There was an incredible level of cringe in the beginning, they go way overboard with making Caleb "rebellous cool". The other sad part is, we spent almost no time at all with the other cadets - who didn't get that much time in the pilot either. Also having such critical negotiations taking place in a talkshow-way in front of a live-crowd is incredible naive.

The positives: But somehow, I think the vibe of this episode fit much better with the premise of the show. Yes, Caleb again saves the day on an intergalactic level. But it feels much more "low-level", which helps. The Academy felt much more like a training and teaching place here, a bit like Hogwarts, and having a romance episode feels very much in line with it.

In general, this show so far has 3 different layers:
1) Student drama at a spaceship Academy
2) The search for Caleb's mom
3) Rebuilding the Federation

The 3rd one clashes pretty hard with the other two and doesn't really work at all IMO, the worldbuilding around the burn is way too nebulous, but also suffering from small-universe syndrome. Andromeda this is not.
The 2nd one is a pretty service-able overarching mystery - nothing special, but a good "hook".

The first one is the one that works the best. Ignore all the worldbuilding, treknology, canon, plotholes - just sci-fi teachers & students. That works. And it's the best that this is also the angle the show is focusing the most on tbh.
I still think this show would work better in the 24th century, where it wouldn't need to do so much worldbuilding on it's own (which is impossible with being 100% reliant on DIS' season 3 burn plotline) but could rely on the "normal" Star Trek setting.
But despite that the show works well enough for me to continue watching for now.

We will see, but my impression from the advanced reviews is they're going to back off from Caleb a bit and focus on other characters.

We know, for example, Episode 4 focuses on Jay-Den, and Episode 5 on SAM.

I hate to keep thinking about Prodigy but they're so similar and that worked because they had the kids just spend time alone together figuring things out for like 10 episodes without further complications and introducing the "destroy the Federation" plot in the next 10 episodes. It was a nice way to focus the stories so you don't have Caleb chasing after his mom be both the conflict and the resolution to all their bigger problems.

The captions called the Exocomp Almond Basket. I guess Peanut Hamper's naming convention caught on with her people.

Some of the bro stuff sounds modern, but spending a lot of time with college students lately the TV show characters barely use current slang. I can't recall even hearing "it's giving" or "low key" on the show.

Well... There's good reason Paramount didn't want Prodigy to keep airing anymore once they started production on Academy...

the references to Lower Decks (Almond Basket!) and Prodigy (mentions of Protostar, Dal , Gwyn , and a freaking live action Brikar!) are fantastic.

It really stings though, because what if someone wanted to check out Prodigy? And it's no longer streaming anywhere . I'm glad i picked up physical copies of PRO

Nope, though the Tellarite from those episodes of DSC was shown in one of the shots played in rapid fire during the opening montage or in a trailer.
