Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Bones' TFF getup wouldn't even garner a second look in the 20th or 21st Centuries and apparently the 23rd as well.

And is that a zipper I see before me?

I dunno man, that scarf would warrant a second look.

Nothing on his TMP pimp suit, though.

When did it become the rule that people of the future will wear the same style clothing as people from centuries before? We aren't talking 240 to 374 years here anymore(that was bad enough). We are now talking 1200 years. Its laughable.

The average person doesn't give even the remotest of fucks about this because it's a tv show. Trek has never, and I mean never, been an attempt at trying to extrapolate "the future". It's a future fairy tale with the trappings of science.

Though I'm trying not to be negative towards this show, I got to be honest, hearing the "Tricorder. Medical tricorder" gag from Caretaker reused made me groan.
But DS9 did it better:
O'BRIEN: Oh, you were going to do this?
ENGINEER: It's on the duty roster.
BASHIR: Must have been some mix-up.
ENGINEER: Isn't that a medical tricorder?
BASHIR: Yes. Yes, it is. I'm a doctor.
ENGINEER: Why do we need a doctor to repair a power relay?
BASHIR: You don't, obviously. No, I'm doing a study. It has to do with work-related stress.

I think there's something to be said in terms of worldbuilding to put some thought into future fashion, lingo, etc.

That said, I think the ship has sailed long ago on this with Star Trek, and short of a full reboot, I just don't expect it to have a truly immersive future culture where I suspend disbelief.

I think Memory Alpha needs a zipper page.
