Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

^ On the other hand, however, no one should jump through every damn hoop dangled in front of them. ;) I know it's often easier said than done, but if possible, simply ignore posters whose posts seem troll-ish to you. Don't feed the troll, as it were.

But also, it has not escaped me that this entire tangent has only been brought upon us because @nightwind1 felt the need to comment on a post from a month (!) ago. Please don’t do this. We have enough drama in the here and now, we don't need to constantly rehash the ones from the past.

General curiosity question: did anyone else want to go to Starfleet Academy as a younger fan? I've had a fascination with the cadet life for a while now but I suspect many imagine themselves as officers first.

Stacks of books and bullies? Sounds like High School. Hard pass. ;)

I would fantasize about serving on a starship, the academy not so much.;)

Never. Neither as a kid or an adult did the cadet life ever interest me. I found the idea boring.

I hated school.

So, no.
Fascinating that the revulsion towards school is a factor. Starships always struck me as way too dangerous to be my first Starfleet experience.

Well, if Starfleet were a real thing and it was my ambition, of course I would do the Academy. But when I was at the Academy, I wouldn't say "this is my dream come true", it would just be the first step towards the dream. The dream coming true would be when I got my first starship assignment.

Who wants to watch a show about study hall?
*Raises hand*

I guess I get too practical in my own imagination 😆

Of course the dream is a ship assignment, but the process of learning and training appears to me.

Simon Tarses said it best in "The Drumhead", when he said he didn't want to wait and sit in classrooms for 4 years.
A fair point of view, just not one I share.

What got me into Star Trek was escapism. When I was a kid, escapist would mean "anywhere but school!"
Escapism is hard for me

"Roddenberry's Utopia" is why people like Trek.
Absolutely not.

Had that been evident in the Original STAR TREK (it never was; that shift came when GR tried to completely re-envision Star Trek with ST: TNG - which doesn't have many episodes I now find rewatchable - and his depiction in TNG of 'perfect' interchangeable and well adjusted mannequin like characters) - I wouldn't have continued watching it.

Utopia wasn't what drew me to watch or enjoy STAR TREK at all.
