Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley developing Star Trek reboot for Paramount

Late to this, but I read back through the thread and I just want to make sure I’m not having a stroke or something…are people making the argument that when we see an earlier version of a character (in the prime timeline) that they’re…not the same character? That is, say, Uhura in SNW is not Uhura from TOS and beyond? Surely that can’t be the argument.

That is the argument.
I actually see this as a variant of the old “The Suliban were never mentioned in TOS, therefore they didn’t exist and ENT isn’t canon!” argument. (For which my response was, “Not once did Law & Order ever mention the Ottoman Empire, therefore the Ottomans didn’t exist and World War I didn’t happen!”)

It's clear there's no interest in actually having a discussion or any effort at understanding a different point of view but just being right. As usual, I see Trek fans insisting only one way must be treated as gospel. More's the pity :sigh:

This is not just a "different point of view" situation but a case of a willful rejection of the reality of TV and movie productions' intent, and how said intent met the beliefs of the innumerable fans who realized the TOS movies were not some alternate reality from TOS, or how the world, characters and visual language of TOS fit seamlessly into the DS9 episode, again, as intended. You are free to see ST as you care to, but you're also attempting to sell an idea that is the opposite of what those who produced the content wanted and delivered.

I stand by my opinion that the characters in TOS feel different than their film counterparts, and the refit Enterprise doesn't fit as an update to the TOS ship.

Refits never meant a bolt-by-bolt, panel-by-panel replication of an original model, but the skeleton and visual influence remains.

Colonel Blake in the MASH movie is not the same guy as Colonel Blake from the TV show.

fireproof78 does not seem to understand that the characters from the M*A*S*H* TV series were in no way supposed to be connected to / a continuation of the movie characters--the polar opposite of the Star Trek situation, where no one behind TMP ever claimed the movie was essentially some alternate version / "way it should have been" in any official marketing of the movie. The movie was deliberately built on an acceptance of the film being a direct "next chapter" of the TOS characters/situations, and of course, millions of fans' investment in said characters and situations. Roddenberry's comments were not the guiding or applied approach to the film as produced and released, and as anyone knows by now, his stab at revisionism was ignored to spectacular results with TWOK, a film which made an even harder, direct tie to the maturing character lives, behavior and relationship to each other as established in TOS.

So...what fans do here daily?

I'm not attempting to sell anything. I'm stating my highly subjective feelings based upon my reaction to watching TOS and then the films. That the worlds do not feel exactly the same regardless of authorial intent, which was mixed.

And doesn't mKe realistic sense to me. Thank you.

I understand it fine and Roddenberry's intent of "this is how it should have always looked." Funny how that intent gets ignored or downplayed for other intent.

By repeating themes of TMP of Kirk needing his command which is such bullshit. He learned nothing from TMP. He regresses as a character.

To be fair, TOS always strongly implied that Chapel’s infatuation with Spock was completely unrequited, and that there was no previous relationship between them that went sour, like what SNW is retconning. I mean, c’mon, the reason why the character of Chapel even existed past WALGMO was to show that Spock could never be tempted by a human woman. She was more of a plot device than a character.

To me, the biggest thing for TOS was none of the characters felt like they had much history. Their adventures just happened. Other than the main characters. It's hard to imagine their lives before TOS.

SNW has retconned lots of "TOS." stuff. Lots of it done in a interesting way but at the same time I am not sure it's been done in ways that makes it feel like they are exactly the same people in different time periods. That is why I kind of like the idea of SNW taking place in another universe were things are sort of happening like they do in the Prime Universe but just slightly different.

Which is why I maintain that TOS stands apart. The characters have a certain feel to them that isn't well replicated in to the film era or TNG or now SNW. It isn't a perfect fit.

It's why I figure that First Contact led to Enterprise, which led to Discovery, which led to SNW which will lead to a version of events in TOS but not a one to one exact copy of TOS episodes.

It's fiction. I just roll with it.
