Matt Smith Lands Villain Role in "Star Wars: Starfighter"

…actually, I’ll go one further: Because of all that, I kind of expect both upcoming films to underperform. (But on the other hand, I saw the Comic-Con video of people repeatedly breaking out into enthusiastic whoops throughout the Mandalorian and Grogu trailer, so I guess it’s entirely possible that I’m just finally aging out…)

Probably a value-neutral statement: While I’ve actually been pretty happy with most of the Disney era, for some reason with The Mandalorian and Grogu and Starfighter I do feel like we’ve moved more firmly into the “MCU” era of Star Wars, where it’s no longer a saga but rather a sandbox. It feels like it’s not really “going” anywhere anymore, akin the same way that most traditional Westerns weren’t leading to some grand climax either. (Unless the Kinberg trilogy — if it happens — turns out to be Eps X-XII, I guess. Or the Rey movie happens, which I was hopeful about but am starting to think may be fading away like the various others.)
That's actually the approach I prefer for these kind of franchise, it makes more sense for the universe to just be a shared setting for different stories, it doesn't really need to all be one big story that's leading to a specific conclusion. So more Star Trek, than MCU.

This is pretty much how Star Wars has operated since the novels really kicked off in the early '90s. The only difference now is we're seeing some of these stories told on film and television in addition to books, comics, and video games.
