Spoilers The Controversial Star Wars Opinion Thread

I remember coming out of the cinema's with my best friend and we LOVED AOTC. So overwhelmed by all the pretty that was on screen.
When it was released on DVD we watched it again at my place. Half way through we paused it, looked at each other and wondered what we were thinking when we saw it in cinema's.
I will admit, TPM and ROTS actually have a lot going for it. The bad just really sticks out. AOTC is just bad.

EDITED TO SAY: Revenge of the Sith is probably in my top three of Star Wars movies. In no particular order; ESB, ROTS and Rogue One.

I'll say this about the DVD: at least it doesn't have the audio dynamic range problem that became so prevalent in later years.

Really? I don't think I ever watched it on streaming because it's so low on my list of rewatchable movies.

The villains' plot is so flimsy and can be quickly unraveled if any of the protagonists thinks about it for more than a minute, which none of them actually do.

I liked the prequels at the ages I was when they released (8-14), but now I don't like them. I try to rewatch them, but they just bore me.

When AotC came out in high school, it was a massive cultural event. I remember joking once with some guys that had already seen it that if Yoda didn't "seriously get down," the movie would be a bust.

They assured me that he did, in fact, seriously get down. I couldn't quite believe them - I'd been joking! Surely Lucas would treat his star Jedi Master with more dignity than that. :wtf:

Then I saw the movie, and... oh, the cringe.

It's funny to think back on my experiences. Despite my not liking TPM as a film, the film was an even for me and my teen friends (14 at the time of TPM). We were gathering the Pepsi cans, props, making fan art and films. The film might have been a let down but the rest was fantastic. The books, the music, all of it was an experience.

AOTC was still one that we went to see, and celebrate my birthday. Mixed reviews for sure, but I still enjoyed Obi-Wan's subplot, and Dooku as a character. But, the romance was rough.

I like the Prequels, but damn, George couldn't direct warm human emotions out of most of those actors.

Someone on another board of mine recently observed that McDiarmid was the only PT actor who seemed to be able to give a good performance in spite of Lucas' writing and directing. I observed that was probably because his was the only character who didn't simply speak his honest mind every time he talked. The other poster had to admit I had a point. :rommie:

How can the ladies not be swayed by Anakin's smooth romantic charm?
Padme wasn't much better.

Aye, but at least the lads - well, most of us, at least (and some of the lasses) in the audience were treated to this George Lucas costuming special:

I don't know if it was intentional, but I started to figure the point of Padme was to show that, along with the Jedi, the Republic has a problem with propping up its children as figureheads, leading to them having poor mental and social development skills. Hence, despite having a better moral center than him, Padme still falls for Anakin in the most bizarre ways possible.

My high school buddies and I speculated that Anakin must have dabbled in some Dark Side mental persuasion techniques to win her affection despite the nonsense he was saying aloud...

To Me Empire Strikes Back is the best of all of them....

1. George Lucas didn't direct it, and it shows, it had more of a feature film feel, like it almost could have been a stand alone movie
2. The comedy was subtle and credible
3. The Characters exhibited growth from the original
Han became part of the family officially
Leia expanded her role as a competent leader but also a sensitive woman who wasn't afraid to show more subtle emotion(s)
Chewy also officially became a trusted member of the family
Luke: this was a transitional movie for him, bridging the wide eyed kid from SW and the wise, pragmatic Jedi seen in Return of the Jedi (he experienced his growing pains in 'Empire')
Vader: we saw cracks in the ominous exterior that there might be something more under the surface
4. it gave us Yoda
5. It gave us Lando
6. It gave us one of the most shocking reveals in cinematic history
7. It was a perfect cliff-hanger:
Han in Carbonite
Yoda's "There is another..." line
Chewy and Lando flying off

I could watch Empire over and over, (and I often do for that matter!)
