DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

In the past, most of the mergers we've had in the past few years probably would've been disallowed under antitrust laws. But we don't live in that world anymore.
The past few years were the Biden administration.

Consolidation has been going in for decades...

In case anyone wanted to stick to the subject, ran across this article which says that Gunn is making the DCOU projects really all about teams (or "squads ").

It makes sense, if they aren't going full MCU production wise, but want to have an entire DC universe on hand.

This allows the general audience to jump right in. And they can determine later by buzz if any individual needs special attention

Would another studio actually be allowed to buy WB? Wouldn't that be getting a little too close to a monopoly?

I'm OK with it if the company doesn't already own one of the other old Hollywood studios. That rules out Comcast who owns Universal, and Amazon who owns MGM. It's inevitable that all the old studios will eventually end up as subsidiaries. The only available companies I can think of are Netflix and the tech companies Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

I don't know about Netflix and Apple, they pretty much rival the major studios at this point.
Although Microsoft or Google wouldn't bother me, since they haven't really been involved in movie or TV production. I'm not as sure Microsoft, but I could see Google wanting to get into the entertainment industry, they do have their fingers in a lot of other industries at this point.

I thought I saw something about, "We're not interested in legacy media" from Netflix in the past week or two. Perhaps just a negotating tactic or "We're not truly interested, but if you are forcing our hand"?

The "that" news is old. The Netflix CEO recently said something along the lines of, "We don't want to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, but we're looking into it," but of course, it's a lie that they don't want to buy. So far, they don't just want to buy Discovery TV channels. They also want to buy the production companies, HBO and HBO Max.

On the one hand: Netflix will be showing the final episode of Stranger Things in theaters. The latest Knives Out movie and The Chronicles of Narnia will be showing in theaters for four weeks. I'm thinking, "Nothing would change if Netflix bought it. It would be nice." Then I see a few comments on Twitter. "I hope no one buys it," I say.

Oh no! I have only got one episode left of Peacemaker! I love this show, John Cena is so good as Peacemaker, I hope they make another season soon
They will be picking up on threads from it in the movies coming out over the next few years, but there are no plans right now for a third season.

I’m (past) ready for the promotional campaign for Supergirl to start kicking into gear. Surprised we haven’t seen Momoa in costume as Lobo yet. (Not that I personally care — I’d prefer he wasn’t in the film at all — but it seems an obvious thing for the studio to put out there.) If Superman is any example, we should get a teaser trailer by the end of the year at least, but I think it might have been a good idea for them to push one out a bit sooner, to better capitalize on Superman’s momentum and the buzz over Alcock’s cameo in that film. Superman also got a ton of free Internet advertising thanks to the location shooting photos, which Supergirl hasn’t had the benefit of. Plus Supergirl is releasing a little earlier than Superman did (June as opposed to July).

Patience, I know. :p

Speaking of patience, this Hollywood Reporter article suggests Lanterns has been delayed to after Supergirl instead of early 2026 as previously projected. It's the one project I'm actively excited for so this is a bit of bummer.
Not a Green Lantern guy, but I’m interested because of Tom King’s involvement. Well, I guess that and just as an element of Gunn’s DCU in general.

I forgot to mention above that putting out that Supergirl teaser poster mere days after Superman’s release was a great idea, but it’s been radio silence ever since. They should have maintained momentum by parceling out some little something every six weeks or so — a Lobo promo shot, as mentioned, or a dramatic image from the film of Supergirl with Ruthye. Keep reminding folks (particularly audiences that loved Superman) that the next adventure of the Superfamily is coming soon, before the first trailer hits.

I'm not sure how I feel about an Earthbound GL series, but I guess it was pretty inevitable in live-action, and I remind myself that the original comic was a pretty typical Earthbound superhero series in its early years, with the wider Corps only being gradually developed. And there have been other Earthbound eras like the "Hard-Traveling Heroes" partnership with Green Arrow -- which I kind of expect might be an influence on this show, though that's just guessing.

I'm technically not either having never read or watched anything significant with any of them (I read a handful of DC comics as a kid where one of them had a supporting role), but I've always been fascinated by the concept.

Yeah, I was disappointed when I heard this was going to be an Earthbound, mystery kind of thing, instead of the big space epic I was hoping for. My only real familiarity from Green Lantern comes from the animation, but one of things I've loved has been all of the crazy aliens and space stuff, and I've been disappointed that most of the live action stuff so far. Obviously they wouldn't be able to go as nuts with that stuff in live action, but something along the lines of the Paramount+ Star Treks, and Disney+ Star Wars would be enough to make me happy.
