Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Let me have a crack at it …

[Beautiful images of Earth, space and 32nd century starships.
Then, the voice of Holly Hunter as Chancellor Nahla Ake:]

“Earth. The once birthplace of Starfleet: The dream of reaching for the stars … together.

Then came the Burn … and the stars went silent. We scattered, but we did not forget.

Now Starfleet rises again — training a new generation of cadets from across the galaxy to explore this strange new future … this final frontier.

Welcome … to Starfleet Academy.”

[Cue main theme.]

Has more of an Arrowverse feel to it than Star Trek.

An observation not a criticism, I adore the Arrowverse.

starfleet the new frontier these are many students of a space academy its many years of studying on earth and many other planets to boldy learn where no lifeform has gone before

Let's all not forget that SA's greatest achievement was leaked in an image before the series will ever premiere. The confirmation that at some point Harry Kim made the rank of Admiral.

THIS IS THE GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT IN TREK HISTORY AND IT IS NOW CANON. WE CAN NOW REST.

Unless it's another person named Harry Kim...

That was a typo. The person in question was Kimbrough. Someone by mistake forgot to add the brough part of his name.

On the other hand, I consider it a massive canon violation and disregard for the intricate worldbuilding the brilliant writers of Voyager put into their show. This is proof that Kurtzman and the stooges he employs care nothing for real Star Trek and its fundamentals. This proves to me that Star Trek is doomed and I can not in good conscience support this series. I will only be hate watching, which is more than this travesty deserves.

Cadet: So Doctor, the history books say you were quite the holographic rights activist back in the day. Is that something you still do or...

(backup Doctor from Voyager Living Witness suddenly appears)

Backup Doctor: Wow, I finally reached the Alpha Quadrant! I'm back home in the Federation!

Doctor: Take this obsolete copy of me off to the dilithium mines of Theta Zeta.

Security officer: Yes Doctor.

Backup Doctor: No! NOOOOOO!!!!!

Doctor: Anyway cadet, what was your question again?

Cadet:

Starfleet Academy continues the NuTrek tradition of ripping off Mass Effect:

Starfleet Academy:
SAM
Series Acclimation Mil
SAM is a photonic, or holographic, cadet.

Mass Effect:
SAM
Simulated Adaptive Matrix
SAM is an artificial intelligence.

More examples of NuTrek (Discovery / Picard) ripping off Mass Effect:

🥱 Except SAM/S.A.M. as a name for an artificial life form is so ubiquitous in sci-fi, it’s almost a cliché at this point:
  • The comic (and later animated series) Cannon Busters features a robot girl named S.A.M. (and precedes Mass Effect by a couple of years)
  • the game Red Faction: Armageddon (2011) has an AI guide called S.A.M.
  • in the game Observation (2019) you take the role of an AI called SAM
  • S.A.M. is the name of an android in an eponymous 2016 sci-fi movie
  • it’s the name of a robot in a 2014 graphic novel series of the same name
  • it’s the name of an enemy AI in the 2024 game Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  • S.A.M. is the name of a mech in the graphic novel Amulet
  • Heck, there was a “Sam the robot” (short for “Super Automatic Machine”) on the Sesame Street way back in 1972!
  • not “SAM” per se, but the AI character in 2013’s “Her” is named “Samantha”
So at worst Starfleet Academy is a little unimaginative with the naming of the character. And at best they are basically continuing a sci-fi tradition. But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of a perfectly good opportunity to whine about the current Trek writers, I guess.

I’d rather they leave well enough alone with trying to somehow tie in to Deep Space Nine, but hopefully it will be something like a meaningless blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference in the background.

Other than that there’s a lot of interesting stuff in those interview bits. I appreciate the focus on “mission of the week” style episodes (although I hope not every episode will feel like Discovery’s “All Is Possible”) and I’m more and more curious to get to know Jay-Den. I think there’s an interesting opportunity to create a different kind of Klingon character.
