I was thinking the Gorn was already pretty sick from badly infested injuries. A stun might have been deadly. But that's me making it make sense when maybe it doesn't.
I like this explanation. It makes sense. :)

I'd like it even more if it had actually been in the damn episode, though.

I proposed earlier in this thread that this might be the incident that inspired his actions in The Galileo Seven.
Because God forbid Spock ever think of an idea for himself. No, he has to be inspired by something one his shipmates did five years before.

Since my Star Trek viewership started with TNG (I only have vague memories of seeing the faceless lady from "Charlie X" and getting nightmares as a result so avoided it as a child), so I never had the direct perspective of Vulcans as a super mysterious people. With the understanding of Vulcans being longterm allies of Earth and founders of the Federation, I have always found the idea that pon farr was secret - the basic mating practices of our closest allies - to be patently absurd. That would require no human biologist or sociologist or anything akin to do any kind of real inquiry into the Vulcan species or culture. And if they barred humans from exploring such things, then that would need to be clearly stated for it to make sense.
It makes sense to me, but then, I grew up watching TOS in syndication in the 70s. The Spock that TOS presented was a very serious & mysterious guy who didn't share much of anything with his shipmates. In WNMHGB, Spock says that one of his ancestors married a human female. Before long, they said that Spock was half human (Probably because that was simpler than saying he was 1/16th human or something). By "This Side of Paradise," Spock says his mother was a teacher and his father was an ambassador. (Note the past tense, perhaps implying they were dead.)

In the second season, we find out that Spock's father is actually Sarek, a super-prominent & well-respected ambassador. But Kirk & co. had no idea of this until Sarek & Amanda actually came aboard the Enterprise. Spock obviously didn't volunteer any more information than he had to. And Kirk and McCoy had no idea that Spock came from an important family until they saw T'Pring officiating over Spock's wedding in "Amok Time." And nobody on the bridge crew had any idea who T'Pring was until she popped up on the Enterprise's viewscreen.

It was this sense of mystery that propelled Spock to such massive popularity, because he and his home planet of Vulcan were instantly intriguing to viewers. Leila Kolomi, the neck pinch, the mind meld, each new discovery about Spock was another piece of the puzzle.

So yeah, I have no problem believing that Vulcans kept Pon Farr a secret from humans, especially when there weren't a lot of Vulcans in Starfleet. Vulcans would've just taken personal leave around the time when they were scheduled to go through Pon Farr & then returned to their regular assignments none the wiser. And I assume when Pon Farr wasn't happening, they'd show no sign of it during a routine medical scan. McCoy says as much even when Spock is undergoing the symptoms.

McCOY: There's a growing imbalance of body functions, as if in our bodies huge amounts of adrenalin were constantly being pumped into our bloodstreams. Now, I can't trace it down in my biocomps. Spock won't tell me what it is. But if it isn't stopped somehow, the physical and emotional pressures will simply kill him.

Remember in "Amok Time" even Spock was surprised by his Pon Farr happening when it did, perhaps because of his mixed heritage. ("I'd hoped I would be spared this, but the ancient drives are too strong.") And he spends the first act of the episode refusing to explain what's happening to him, and only breaks down and tells Kirk once Kirk says whatever he says will be confidential.

So yeah, I think DSC and SNW have made a major misstep with Spock by stripping away almost all the mystery of the character. Especially since they take place 5-10 years before TOS, when Spock should be even LESS forthcoming with his shipmates, not more.

Abrams opted for something like that approach, at least nominally presenting and prompting Quinto to portray him very closely in the footsteps of Nimoy.
Except for Spock losing his temper and going nuts on a regular basis.

Sounds like a "but my headcanon/fanfic" problem.
There is nothing so binding to a fan as their own headcanon.

Probably going to introduce another TOS character. Bones I'm guessing.
Season 1 - Kirk
Season 2 - Scotty
I bet you're right.

I'm not thrilled about it, but I bet you're right.

Did you watch TOS?
Yes. When TOS Spock lost his temper, he was usually under some sort of mind control ("This Side of Paradise"), his internal biology was doing wacky things ("Amok Time"), or an alien was possessing his body ("Return to Tomorrow"), or time travel shenanigans that didn't make much sense because it was the third season ("All Our Yesterdays"). All external forces acting upon him. On TOS, Spock acting emotional was a sign that something was not right.

The Abrams/Kelvin Spock lost his temper because of stuff he was emotional about, i.e. internal forces, like getting teased by Vulcan children, his mother Amanda dying, Vulcan blowing up, Kirk goading him, or Kirk dying for five minutes. That's the difference.

...Except for Spock losing his temper and going nuts on a regular basis....
Yeah:
TOS S1 The Naked Time
TOS S1 The Menagerie
TOS S1 The Gallileo Seven
TOS S1 This Side of Paradise
TOS S1 Devil In The Dark
TOS S1 Operation Anihilate

TOS S2 Amok Time
TOS S2 The Changeling
TOS S2 The Immunity Syndrome
TOS S2 Return To Tommorrow

TOS S3 Spock's Brain
TOS S3 The Enterprise Incident
TOS S3 Plato's Stepchildren
TOS S3 All Our Yesterdays

Don't show Spock loosing his tmper or going a bit nuts...oh, wait.

14 out of 79 = 17.7%

SNW averages maybe 2 episosdes in a 10 episode season that ereally show a more 'Human side' or 'Spock going nuts' so yeah, about 20%.

17.7% is near enough to 20% to be 'in the ballpark' of STAR TREK in general showing a angry/crazy/Non-Vulcan Spock.

Did I catch that right - When the Metron made Erica "forget" - he mentioned something like they "might need to make all of humanity forget the Gorn" & vice versa?

Like - are the writers building in a retcon of epic promotions, where everyone actually forgets all the intricate Gorn stories, just to have "Arena" play out with Kirk not knowing what a "Gorn" is?

The metron said they might change humans perception of the gorn. So yeah it could mean wipe out everything that happened. At least starfleets and the gorns knowledge of eachother.

He lost his entire planet. Even Immunity Syndrome noted Spock being impacted by the loss of 400.

I'm always baffled by the inhumanity ascribed to Spock in the face of extreme challenges.

Apologies if this has been posted (and surely it has) but the writer of the episode stated on a podcast that the planet in Terrarium is indeed the same planet as the one in Arena. Which is why there is a Vasquez rock near the shelter.

Edited to remove my stupid ass referring to the planet as Cestus III.

....wut?
Yeah, that's not Cestus III from TOS. At all.
These writers man, seriously.
At this point I am just waiting for the Borg to show up on SNW.
