Spoilers Superman (2025) Grade and Discussion

What I liked

* Nicholas Hoult is a brilliant Lex Luthor and probably the best version on film for me.

* Action scenes are easier to follow than Snyder's version.

* Krypto is wonderful.

* David Corenswet's & Rachel Brosnahan are really good as Clark/Superman & Lois.

* Guy Gardner/Green Lantern & Mr Terrific are really strong additions.

* Beautifully shot.

* I like that Jonathan Kent is alive

* Love the casting for Perry and Jimmy Olsen actually had something to do, which was cool.

* The interview scene with Clark & Lois was great and something we really needed in BVS.

* Liked the touch upon Social media mis use with troll/bot farms mirroring real life.

What I didn't like

* Superman felt a little weak for Superman.

I thought he was presented at just the right power level, I don't like him to be to powerful, there needs to be at least a little big of danger and challenge in his fights.

* The start of the film made me feel like I had missed the actual start and the universe feels too far along - Something BVS got criticism for.

I loved that about it, I thought it was fun to get a universe where superheros and portals to pocket universes and kaiju are just a part of every day life.

* Making his parents evil, in particular his dad. I loved what Snyder and Crowe did with Jor-El so this change was meh.

I thought that was an interesting change of pace, and really helped to clarify just how important the Kents were in making Clark the person he is today.

* Hawkgirl felt under developed as opposed to the other of the Justice Gang.

In a movie like this, there are always going to be a few characters who don't get a ton of development.

* Justice Gang sounds stupid but it does sound like a spinoff movie we might get in the style of Guardian of the Galaxy.

That's kind of the whole point.

* Movie felt a little chaotic at times like the random battle with the little creature that became massive and the random squid thing that just pops up.

OK this is a fair complaint, but I wasn't bothered by it.

* Speaking of that squid thing --- The gag of the Gang fighting the giant squid thing in the background during a serious conversation with Lois/Clark was really stupid and inappropriate with the tone.

That was one of my favorite scenes in the movie, I love that this a universe where that kind of thing happens and there are enough other superheroes that he can just blow it off. It wasn't that big of a threat, so he didn't need to go rushing off to help.

* Lex use of POWERFUL tech like making a pocket universe was way OTT and felt like cheap plot devices.

I don't know, it felt like exactly the kind of thing you'd expect a character like Lex to do in this kind of universe.

* The particle river thing in the pocket universe looked awful CGI wise and the alien baby CGI was horrendous.

I looked fine to me.

* The music wasn't memorable like Hans Zimmer MoS

I liked it.

* Why doesn't Lex clone more Ultraman's to kill Superman?

Because the first one failed, and it would probably be too complicated to try to run more than one at a time.

* Supergirl is a drunk?

James Gunn explained in an interview that she's dealing with a lot of trauma living on Argo City as it fell apart after Krypton's destruction. I'm sure her movie will go into it in a lot more detail.

* Speaking of that squid thing --- The gag of the Gang fighting the giant squid thing in the background during a serious conversation with Lois/Clark was really stupid and inappropriate with the tone.

He did something similar at the beginning of GOTG2, where Groot danced to Electric Light Orchestra 'Mr. Blue Sky' in the foreground, while the Guardians fought a squid thing in the background.

It occurs to me that IMO, between Superman & Lois and Gunn’s Superman, we have nigh-perfect modern realizations of both the franchise’s more serious and more fanciful sides.

The foundation has been laid. Everything is established. The first movie was a couple of years ago sort of feeling.

I didn't like the Scooby Doo gang vibe of having to involve all of the main Daily Planet gang

Superman always cites his sources.

That's because his sources are usually just himself using a different name.

Except when they need to stay anonymous for their protection. He is a journalist, after all.

Just one with questionable ethics.

The foundation has been laid. Everything is established. The first movie was a couple of years ago sort of feeling.

That was intentional on Gunn's part. He's spoken about this. We don't need yet another origin story for Superman. You're supposed to feel like that origin movie's already happened and we can get right in to the action.

I mean, they been useless appendages in these movies for decades. Now, they're characters.

Brian Bendis already established that Krypton was an imperialist civilization viewed as an oppressor to unite against by other worlds, and that Jor-El in particular was an elitist asshole who looked down on Earthlings. He also survived the destruction of Krypton, btw., and I think that is still canon to the current comics.
Although it might not be, Mark Waid has written some other stories since then featuring a more benevolent Jor-El who even disapproved of the use of the Phantom Zone as a prison.
Then again, Jor-El was a major factor in Jon Kent's premature aging-up (timey-wimey stuff), and that clearly happened, so whatever.

I just finished the Rebirth arc where Mr. Oz is exposed as Jor-El.

I think the Bendis Man of Steel comes after that, right?

Have not seen it happen yet as complaint but would not surprise me if Cult members think merely Pa being alive when Clark is an adult is an attack on them and their leader. Pesky detail of it being decades old idea in the comics and already used in tv and animation would be irrelevant to them.

He made the opposite call with the Krypto-punching scene based pn audience input, and IMO he was right on that one, too.

The Snyder cult is melting down on Twitter and reddit. The entire world is in a conspiracy to lie - LIE, I TELL YOU! - about the success and popularity of Superman.

They're posting videos of themselves ripping up Superman tee shirts and breaking Superman action figures. Bunch of putzes.

Honestly, Pa Kent still being alive did jump out at me when seeing the trailer. Not that it bothered me any. I know that he is still alive in later comic adaptions(and animated versions), but his death has happened in every live action version of Superman I've seen from the George Reeves series thru the Snyder version.

The original Action Comics Number One spent zero time on Pa Kent or Jor El for that matter. The origin story was so quick that superman was an adult in costume by like panel five. So Pa Kent dying must have come in later issues and every comic reboot likes to change things up.

Its certainly not anything earth shattering like taking him from simply leaping buildings in Action Comics One to full fledged flying by the radio show. Yet no one ever complains about that change.

You didn't see Lois and Clark from the 90s? Pa Kent's been alive in the comics for almost as long as Superman had been published prior to that.
