That was a fun hijinks episode. Really love to see SNW is still playing around with themes and genres.

Also loved not only that vocal cameo, but the slight allusion to the ending of The Squire of Gothos, too. Even better, they didn’t try to spell things out or explain it.
Good. We don't need every detail explained like in most shows now.

Most of us Trekkies don't need to be spoonfed.

I remarked to my wife as that played. "I guess Wham! will be classical music by then."
There's one other thing: It might be only tangentially related to this specific episode, but this episode really made it clear:

SNW is maybe the BEST star trek has ever looked! And that includes the friggin' movies.

The costumes, makeup (both alien & human), the sets, the vfx, the colours - Star Trek has never looked better. It's not just the money. DIS & PIC had that too. This show has developed an aesthetic, while very much "modern TOS", is so unique & du much it's own thing. It's kind of a Marvel to witness.
Just wish we'd get more episodes.
I agree. TOS was lit, set and costumed to be vivid and bright for black and white TV back in an era where owning a colour TV was a luxury.
Quite fun… but would it have killed them to dedicate the episode to Peter David?
There should have been one

BUT and a big one: In TSoG, Trelane doesn't take into account the distance light traveled to him and somehow thinks Kirk and crew are from the 1800s. Yet he was on a starbase orbiting Earth -before- TSoG...

But from his perspective the SNW episode happens after "The Squire of Gothos(TOS)." Trelane is older now. And Starbase 1 orbits Jupiter, not Earth.
Oh, I thought it was Earth, I might have missed that, we were making pork BBQ and I was in the kitchen.

True, but in the sense this is a prequel to TOS, we would think this happened first, but Q go wherever they wish in time on a whim

rewatched Squire of Gothos last night, and it seems fairly consistent with what we know about Q lore.

Only thing that clashes is the machine governing Trelane's powers, although perhaps Q put him on a leash to stop the youngster's power spiralling out of control

I have no issue with the plot or the John De Lancie cameo. But I don’t understand why it’s a Spock story instead of an Uhura & Ortegas story, when this episode sets up something between Uhura, Ortegas and Ortegas’ brother. And when Uhura also met Trelane in “The Squire of Gothos”. And its set three months from the previous episode where Ortegas suffered some gruesome injuries and clearly retains some trauma from that event as evident by the end of the episode, so her recovery journey should have been mentioned.

Sorry, but with how much attention Spock get in both this series and the franchise as a whole, making this episode about him seemed unnecessary.

Starbase 1's location was established way back in S1 of Disco. Were you in the kitchen that long?

I believe Season 1 of Discovery said it was 100 AU from Earth. Can't be Jupiter, as it's only 5.4 AU. The onscreen VFX made it look like Earth, or at least an earthlike planet. Just another sign about how sloppy Discovery's first season was, particularly when it came to integration of VFX and scripts.

SNW retconned it to be around Jupiter, however. If you want it to somehow make sense within universe, you can just presume it was rebuilt in a new location.

Regarding the whole Trelane/Q thing, I truly do not care. And I say that as a member of the last generation who remembers Star Trek before TNG. Yes, I think it's stupid that they bring in Trelane basically just to provoke an "I know what that is!" reaction from the fandom, but that's the extent of it.

My real issue is the "lovelorn Spock" story arc. This is not the Mr. Spock that launched the Star Trek franchise (and don't kid yourself, if the Spock character had been replaced by a generic white guy on The Original Series, it might not have made it past 13 episodes before getting canceled). Spock, especially young Spock, should be incapable of a human-style romantic relationship. That was the whole point of "This Side of Paradise"; Leila wanted something from him that he simply didn't have without the spores' influence. It was the same with Christine. She was in love with him, but Spock was incapable of reciprocating those feelings. That suppression of emotion, to the point where he didn't even know how to feel certain feelings even though the ability to have them was buried deep inside him, has always been a central part of the Spock character. If you take that away he's not Spock anymore, even if you keep the superficial stuff like the pointed ears and the eyebrow lift.

The same Spock who we see in The Cage grinning over vibrating plants and yelling over the disappearance of "THE WOMEN!"? The same Spock who smirks in reaction to Kirk talking about the human emotion irritation in WNMHGB? Or further smirks when he and Uhura perform a song together in Charlie X?

Yes, yes, early days, things hadn't been established and developed yet. All SNW is doing is taking that inconsistent way Spock behaved in the early episodes and making it fit with what was later established about himself specifically and Vulcans generally.

But he has emotions, as presented in the Cage, and in Yesteryear. There was some transition of Spock to be suppressed.

Turning Early-Installment Weirdness into Entire Prequel Weirdness.

Exactly on point. Any supposed "inconsistencies" in Spock's character were established all the way back in the original series. Strange New Worlds is clearly just putting those inconsistencies into proper context.

Or the same Spock we see laughing at the end of ST:IV?

Spock's so inconsistent that Boimler actually had a panic attack about it when he found out.
Boimler only knew what he read about Spock in the history texts, not the actual person. He even makes a point of bringing that up and apologizing for his preconceived notions about the crew later in the episode. History books don't always have all the details. As Sisko said, Li Nalas will be remembered as the greatest leader of the Bajoran resistance and that's how he will speak of him when asked in the future, despite knowing that so much of Li's story is more legend than fact.
