I gave it a 7/10.
Episode overall was good but the way they broke canon with the Gorn is really an insult to long time fans.
Who are all these long time fans?
Sweeping generalizations like this are insulting to all the other longtime fans like me who've been watching since it aired in 1966. You can be insulted all you want but you do not represent the whole. The echo chamber where you kvetch about this with other like-minded individuals is not as big or representative as you need to believe it is.

Indeed. Another fan from the “class of ‘66” here.

And canon can’t be broken.

Agreed. I don't go all the way back to 1966, but I've been a fan ever since the original series syndication days and I've never been "insulted" by changes made by later productions. The very notion is laughable.

Well paced episode. Tense throughout. But the ending, having everything conclude as a happy ending, even Batel... just undermines it all a bit. SNW took a page from DISCO, and not in a good way... because there, the fans were (rightfully) calling them out on so many problems with DISCO being a prequel, so for season 3 onward, it takes place later than ANY episode ever did: the 32nd century. Here, I guess enough fans (not rightfully) had issues with the Gorn being used, so their solution: put them all in a long hibernation. I feel like that's lazy writing. Also, it's pretty much exactly what happened with the Borg in "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II". And Batel being saved by 'magic blood'... one of the MANY issues I had with INTO DARKNESS. I just shook my head at that. Those two things knock it down a point for me. Plus the ending felt rushed.

Love the inside of the Gorn ship. I also like how they were all in the process of being digested. Reminds me of the movie NOPE: the ufo was really a giant space dwelling animal that was literally eating abducted people. As a horror fan, I loved this, as well as Ortegas' hand being partially gone and her arm partly digested. I hope we get real followup with her on her traumas here.

I like how Pike and April both had valid points and were trying to work within the system to get the best result for both their views.

Una is TRULY an awesome XO. Smart, inspires those under her command, backs her captain but if she feels he is wrong she isn't afraid to tell him that in private, and also reminds Pike of his best phrases and views when he is starting to waver. She's got a strong case to be called the best XO in the franchise. (Though for me, that will always be Spock.) My second favorite character of the series, only a bit behind M'Benga.

Overall, I give it an 8. The current era hasn't done cliffhangers until now, so I can cut it some slack for any issues I might otherwise have.

These Gorn are just dumb. If they just wanted humans for food and stuff, they should have opened up a casino and leisure center to lure as many people in as they could process! And no one would notice. It worked for the Ovions from Battlestar Galactica.

I love that Captain Batel was saved in time. She's too awesome to die. Wish that treatment could be applied retroactively to save Hemmer. Shame he never got a mention.

April is wise. A most prudent Admrial.
