Please stop pointing people to TAS.
Why? It's got some amazing stories in it.
Why not? It has good episodes
My first reaction is that it looks like a lot of fun. But there’s also the hope that not every episode will be some high concept “let’s put the crew in period costumes and make them do something silly” romp. I think episodes like “Subspace Rhapsody” work much better if they are the rare exception and not the rule. Let’s see, we now have a holodeck murder mystery, everybody turns Vulcan comedy and the 1950s sci-fi setting — with only ten episodes I kinda hope they’ll leave it at that and make the rest somewhat more serious.
What strikes me as odd about the inclusion of a holodeck isn’t even necessarily that it kinda feels anachronistic for the time period, but the fact that they would feel the need to have the characters indulge in virtual reality adventures at all. That’s something that was always a little odd beginning with TNG: The setting is on the edge of the final frontier, multiple strange new worlds full of the craziest adventures waiting; and yet the writers feel they need a holodeck?
And I’m curious how the 50s sci-fi idea is going to play out. As presented here it kinda feels vaguely similar to what Captain Proton was on Voyager or Benny Russell’s Deep Space Nine stories, for that matter. Which kind of makes this feel like a retread.
Also, if Rhys Darby really turns out to be Trelane, then yeah, I find that just a bit lame as an idea. But we’ll see, I guess.
What I like is the glimpses we get of the continuing story arcs of the Spock/Chapel relationship and the conclusion of the Gorn story.

Usually as a writer indulgence like one Voyager writer loving Regency era novels so incorporated that.
Though, it could also be budgetary and use of prop items easily picked up at the local thrift store might give some breathing room to that.
It reminded me of Black Mirror's USS Callister, which makes me feel like I'm trapped in a hall of mirrors reflecting each other into infinity.
Perhaps one needs to remember that not every single day involved some kind of Trek Adventure aboard a starship and what we see in the episodes of all Trek Shows is very unique occurences between the boredom of starship life.
Just like living aboard a modern aircraft carrier is not all fun and games.
I'm pretty sure most Navy folks nowadays would kill to have something like a holodeck to pass the time aboard ship while off duty.

I’m genuinely open to be convinced when the episode airs, but on its face I’m disappointed the murder mystery has to be a costume / holodeck thing at all. When I heard that they would be doing a murder mystery in season three I thought they meant just on the ship, you know in the actual universe the show takes place. Why does this have to be holodeck thing in the first place is what I’m wondering. But yeah, let’s wait and see.
Yeah, it reminded me of the Callister as well. Hopefully this will be an original idea. It’s kinda odd though that they didn’t let themselves work more visually obvious allusions to the TOS aesthetic in the sci-fi setting and instead created something entirely different. At least it kinda looks like that.
Probably because it’s most likely an alien society. I think making it too TOS would be too on the nose

Oh yeah, that could be. Depending on how it plays out this might be a bit too similar to the premise of Galaxy Quest, though.
I agree, but I trust these writers and actors to make it good either way
So they're making some kind of TV show about their adventures for other planets?
There's something about it that reminds me of that SG-1 episode.
And if they're going to do a murder-mystery party, does it have to be in a style that people today would use when throwing a murder-mystery party? It'd be a lot funnier if they had Star Trek characters doing their idea of 21st Century society.
So sometime in June/July/August.
