All I gotta say is thank God they didn't get this scene from ST09 into the final cut of the film. I honestly believe that some heads would have exploded in theaters over this. Literally...

I mean, a Prime Universe Connie in the alternate timeline, a non-canonical name (Biddeford? Dafuq is a Biddeford?) and another NCC-0xxx number, when they have ALWAYS been in the thousands.

That was the trifecta of canon violations right there!

Oh, and I was kidding before - it's a damn shame it landed on the cutting room floor, actually. The nerd-rage would have been fun to watch unfold...

That's my take, too. They had to dump the design when they realised that giant tentacle ships existed and had to go back to the drawing board

Using a DSC/SNW Connie for the New Jersey would have been a huge mistake. The whole point of the Museum was to give the audience a feeling of nostalgia for past Trek (how successful that was is up to interpretation), and the SNW Connie has NO nostalgic value whatsoever.

Then why use the NX-Refit?

the TOS model they used in Picard also wasn't exactly the same as the TOS one, the saucer was the wrong shape, the hull was way too detailed (also missing details from the original) and the wrong colour, there's missing windows AND windows where there shouldn't be. There's also a few details missing on the saucer

Then why use the NX-Refit?

1. It was a tribute to Doug Drexler.

2. It was the exact same ship that we saw in ENT, only with a secondary hull. It wasn't a completely different design with the same name and registry number.

3. It wasn't originally the primary focus of Frontier Day, so there were zero closeups of the ship.

Yep. Throws the balance completely off on the NX Class design.

Being as we never got a close up, and nobody pointed her out as being the NX-01, my own personal head canon is that Enterprise was tucked safely away inside Spacedock, looking exactly like she looked in the series. What we saw on the outside was just another NX Class they had preserved, only a refitted one.

We know from Strange New Worlds that they had more than one in mothballs. At least they did in 2259.

It was close enough. Nobody was going to think it wasn't the same type of ship from TOS.

I would never have greenlit the NX-01 Refit with the secondary hull, but I don't mind what Drexler wanted to do and I'd rather he have created the Refit design than someone else who had nothing to do with the original NX-01. At least it was his creation to begin with and he'd had been considering the idea for some time around 2004 and 2005.

Better than some new showrunner and visual effects designer throwing an even more ungainly secondary hull on the ship or changing everything else about it just because "kewl."

Yeah, Doug wanted to refit the ship for Season 5 and IIRC even got as far as pitching the idea but the show as cancelled before he got word back.

He didn't actually design the refit until after the show had ended, so it was designed without any of the feedback he would have theoretically received from the rest of the art team and producers.

I wish his old blog still existed, because he blogged the entire design process. IIRC the secondary hull was supposed to have that after market look because the ship was still being used as a test bed for new technologies, the secondary hull had a brand new Warp 7 reactor.

He envisioned the Warp 5 reactor still being in the saucer section and that the entire secondary hull could be jettisoned if there was an emergency and the Warp 5 reactor could be started back up. That's also why the saucer deflector is still there.

When the novel writers adopted the refit they ignored that part and just had more crew quarters added to where the old engineering was.

The more I look at this shot, the more I hate it, honestly.

Just looks like they were trying to model the Diamond Select toy of the Enterprise, but production only gave them a few hours to complete it.

Yeah, I never liked that idea. The NX-01 was supposed to be this massive leap ahead for Starfleet. She was built from the ground up to utilize the new and state of the art Warp 5 engine. That only a few years later, you could just slap on an ugly secondary hull with an even better engine, just feels wrong to me. The jump to Warp 7 should be seen as another technological leap. It shouldn't just be a bolt on upgrade. It should be reserved for the next generation of Starship. Those "Warp 7 Beauties" we heard about.

Yeah, it isn't great. If they wanted to show an original look Constitution, why not show an original Constitution. They went to the trouble of creating an all new, never seen design, which kinda negates the desired nostalgia.

I dunno. I don't think that the relatively minor differences between the New Jersey and the TOS Enterprise constitutes an 'all new, never seen design' (I would apply that description to the SNW Connie.) To me, it's close enough to the original that most people, even hardcore fans, wouldn't think anything was different.

It's more that they went to the trouble of creating an all new CGI model, rather than just using any of the available models of the original Enterprise.
