Spoilers "Superman & Lois": The Fourth and Final Season

Probably the weakest episode of the season thus far, but I suspect there was a conscious desire to pull back and lighten up for a week given how dark and heavy things have been up to this point. And there were some charming moments, a few laughs, and some decent character bits.

Nice to have Clark back, even if he is (unsurprisingly) somewhat diminished.

I was a little unclear why Jonathan was so threatened by the flamethrowers. They've pretty well established that he's as invulnerable as Clark. Did he just panic due to inexperience?

My God, Sophie shot up like a weed between seasons. I thought she was standing on something at first, but nope.

I might have misheard (the sound on my CW affiliate isn't great), but did Kyle have a throwaway line suggesting Pete Ross is dead?

Not bad. I'm glad they're past the grim stuff and letting things take a more positive turn, though they still haven't dealt with, ugh, Doomsday. I'm also glad that Kyle and Chrissy decided to slow it down, because a proposal in the wake of an unplanned pregnancy did seem like a rash decision.

"The courthouse is flooded so we'll use the Kent barn" = "We don't have the budget to build a new set." And they can only afford a few of the formerly-regular cast members per episode, which is why we didn't see Kyle and Chrissy until now and why the best man and maid of honor invitations were so last-minute.

Although unless I'm misremembering, they had the money to credit Michael Cudlitz for the episode even though Luthor wasn't in it.

It did sound to me like he said someone named Petey was gone, which may have been Pete Ross, though that character has only been alluded to in passing in the pilot. I was wondering if I misheard.

As for my CW affiliate, they came back late from commercial so I didn't even see the first part of that conversation. I'm going to have to rewatch that part on the app tomorrow.

I found it odd how the boys kind of regressed a bit with the arguing over a game controller

"Mom! Mom!"

It felt out of place IMO

It was nice to have some of the old cast back even if we know they're all getting their farewells in some dedicated episodes (Last weeks was General Lane. This week it was Kyle and Chrissy)

Odd not to have Lana there or John Henry Irons.

Deadpool- It's like the studio couldn't afford all the cast members............

Superman and Lois - the final season
Episode 4 - "A Perfectly Good Wedding"

GOOD, WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS:
Jon appears to be worried more than the rest of the Kents about Clark's poor health. That said, I believed Lois drawing the parallel between her own changes and those now experienced by Clark was spot-on for the character. Despite the Ed Wood-ian "medicine" which brought Clark back, at least Lois did make a point of reminding Clark that he has the heart of a 60-year old man.

Not for a second did I buy Gretchen being in danger from Luthor--before the obvious fire trap scene. Luthor--not knowing Superman was among the living again--would use the fire trap to continue to eliminate the Kents one by one until Lois is the last one standing with that pain. It would be a nice set-up by the Kent family if they allowed Luthor to think he's succeeded, until some (expected) final showdown. Only this time, the super-sons are actually ready to work with their father--before exploring the possibility of taking over for him, in the event his human heart continues to change him to the point where he's not so super any longer.

The Chrissy and Kyle saga was handled with care and maturity, as both finally realized they did not need to tie the knot so soon. Hopefully, their relationship will weather the coming disasters at the hands of Luthor.

At last! Jordan and Lois cleared the air, and now that Jordan's gifted his suit to Jon to give himself time to process his future, I'm hoping he and his brother--as noted above--do take over for their father. Sure, the series has been cancelled, but it would be nice to leave with the "adventures continue" scene with the sons.

BAD: Nothing much for this category, aside from the flame FX. Yikes.

GRADE: B+.

I thought so, too. They are as much a part of the "family" as anyone else there, so a five second cameo should have been considered. That said, Superman mentioned John Henry taking Luthor's henchman to the D.O.D. so we are supposed to assume John Henry is just too busy to attend.

...but that still does not cover why Lana was not there, unless the showrunners expect viewers to do the writing for them and guess Lana would have some lingering emotional issues regarding Kyle (not love, but just the idea of her ex getting married again), hence her absence.

Heh.

Ex-wife at your wedding can be a bit awkward. So I can see why Lana wasn't there. IIRC, Lana was dating John Henry. So I can see him off the guest list as well.

My burning question is why Clark wears his glasses when training and racing.

This was very good. I love the focus on trying to reach Luthor and Doomsday rather than just meeting violence with violence. That's what The Death of Superman got wrong, reducing a Superman story to brute force. This is a really nice counterpoint to that.

The family secret getting out to more and more Smallville teens is bound to be risky. I wonder if telling Candice is going to turn out to be a mistake. Jordan's decisions have a way of not turning out well.

Speaking of which, how did Lois and Jon fly Elizabeth back to Smallville without letting her in on the secret? The episode skipped over that. I don't think there was enough time in the story for her to have flown from France to Smallville.

I fear I found this one underwhelming. Talky and slow, and lacking either the emotional punch or the narrative drive that has characterized most of the season. At best, it seems to have set the table for more exciting events to come -- especially Luthor's inevitably unhinged reaction to his daughter's rejection, and the idea that Lois has reached (or potentially turned?) Doomsday/Bizarro.

Also, we're at the halfway point of the season already, if you can believe it.
Huge comic moment teased for next episode
Whatever this is, can people please spoiler code it if they're going to discuss it? I prefer to discover "huge moments" in their proper context, i.e., watching the show.

Reflecting further on tonight's show, I realized that Lois drives the two biggest events of the episode -- finding Luthor's daughter and bringing her back, and confronting and trying to reach Doomsday -- so that's pretty cool. :)
