Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

The fact that during the announcement they apparently said Rhys Darby will “guest-star” on the show leads me to believe he won’t appear as someone like say Doctor Boyce, since that would likely be a role for at least a semi-regular appearance, I should think. Someone like Sybok or Captain Garrovick would probably make more sense, because that would likely only be for a once a season appearance.

Yep. I'd want Jeffrey Combs but I'll take any talented actor who can pull it off. One episode, a chance to touch bases with what Boyce has been up to since the end of "The Cage(TOS)," and then he goes off into retirement or back to whatever his then-current posting is. Do it just right and one episode will be enough.

Has Combs been blackballed from Trek? He added so much to the lore over the years, wish they'd cast him in SNW for sure...

I don't think Sybok is a plot thread. Just a reminder he exists, his role as the shame of the Sarek household, and he's out there hippifying the hippies to hip hop horrOHGODIMDYYYIN.

Oh right, forgot about that. My foggy brain remembers reading something about him being passed over for some role in Trek recently, but I could be misremembering. He turned in some memorable performances over the years, that's for sure.
IIRC, someone said they met Combs at a convention in 2018 or 19 where he said he auditioned for a role in Disco's first season but was turned down because "they didn't want someone who had been on the previous Trek shows." Even though Clint Howard did appear in Disco S1, his fourth role in the franchise.

Considering what we know about the troubled Season 1 production, it's possible whoever was against that was gone by the time Clint was cast.

That's it! Hopefully they can get him back in some live action capacity one day...

Darby was ok in Relax I'm From the Future.
I hope they'll add some light to the scene where they say they emit a spectrum of light to confuse the Gorn :D

Boyce could be in a done in one episode.
I guess you’re right. Honestly, I’m open to whatever they plan to do, but for some reason I would have thought if they decided to bring on Boyce it would be more than just for a guest appearance, not sure why.

Ha, you’re right, I hadn’t even noticed that. But then again, maybe it’s just using the invisible spectrum of light? Either way, it’s a little weird that jamming their signals would immediately cause two of their ships crashing into one another. Are they trying to say these guys can’t fly straight without communicating with the other ships?

But yes, elsewhere someone noted that we also don't see the Enterprise fire any weapon at the Gorn (not counting the torpedos at the end), so maybe these effects shots are just not finished?

Although they did try to get Michael Dorn to play a Klingon, so who knows?

Got to say, I have no real interest in seeing Boyce again. Or Piper for that matter. They're just proto-Bones doctor/confidante characters who are already provided for on SNW.
