I'm no Canon Warrior, but the embrace of logic as a philosophy to control their strong biological emotions has been there since TOS. One is a cultural difference and one is not. So, I was confused too by a DNA change that caused them all to be suddenly controlled and logical. "All Vulcans are logical" is a stereotype (Sybok has entered the chat). "Vulcans have strong emotions that most usually control with logic-based discipline" is a fact.

Hopefully, the episode will shed light on this seeming weirdness.

Or... it's just for funsies.

It doesn’t make any sense, but at my age I just don’t care. Ive been in discomfort and pain for several months now and ‘fun’ is pretty high on my list of priorities in entertainment.

It is daft. It’s daft that the hairstyles change as well but… eh, I ask myself:

Could I imagine Star Trek going down the same road in TOS for an episode?

Then I imagine an episode where McCoy is turned Vulcan and starts annoying Spock by being better at it than he is.

TOS is ever so irreverent at times and SNW does a better job of tapping into that than any other Star Trek show ever.

But, but, but, he's one of the Masters who contributed to Star Trek in the 90s, which means he helped shape the franchise with his own blood, sweat and tears. He worked along side Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, who are apparently now blessed saints who Trek fans are permitted to pray to and name churches after. For him to say anything positive about any of the new shows let alone admitting to liking SNW is an Obscenity Against Gene! My worldview is shattered, my faith broken.

May Gene have Mercy on our souls.

I've lauded ENT since post-ENT (I know, I missed the golden age ) and at best I've seen them talked as overworked and overused.

Speaking of people, has anyone seen any interesting reactions to SNW?

I've had my interest peaked when watching a reaction to the Halo TV show. Tragedy of a shitshow, but the people watched had no experience with Halo and their thoughts on the story and people were interesting as outsiders.

SNW does absolutely capture the spirit on TOS better than most of the other entries into Trek.

My main issue with SNW is that from S2 it relies a bit too much on the silly plots. I'm totally ok with some silly. One of DSC's weakness was it's utter insistence on being super serious all the time (the best episode the entire series was the Mudd Time Loop episode... which was a rare moment of DSC allowing itself to have some fun), but SNW has been leaning way too heavily into it.

Sprinkle some silly in. Don't spill the container.

Even the musical was serious and character driven with the songs exposing thing about the characters that they hoped would remain hidden. It's closer to "The Naked Time" than the "Trouble With Tribbles".

I had problems with the execution. (Was it necessary to have them break into song? It took me out of the episode.)

Reminds me of the scene from Amadeus were he has a ballet performed but the king wanted no more ballet music so they performed without music.

I'm a pretty traditional, meat-and-potatoes Trek fan but I liked the musical episode.
