It finally made the crew something more of an ensemble. And because of this and TNG people think that the show was always like this.

Shatner is at his peak as Kirk in the Genesis-Spock trilogy.
You’re not wrong though.
I mean, I rate Shatner highly as an actor anyway, but he’s on fire in TSFS. Much as with the eulogy in TWOK, in TSFS he allows moments of vulnerability (and humanity) to show through Kirk’s bluster.

Honestly, TMP is LIGHT YEARS better than both Abrams directed movies, NEMESIS, and INSURRECTION. Above GENERATIONS, too.

If I had to relate Jurgen to a Trek captain - Sisko all day every day! Acts as a father figure, has worked in the darkest era for the league

This is just a fact.
TMP and TWOK are the indispensable duo. The are The Corbomite Maneuver and The Doomsday Machine.
I think The Motion Picture is much, much better than it often gets credit for. But then I'm a huge fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey, so pretty spaceships investigating gigantic structures in space that are beyond the ken of mortal men are kind of my jam

I wouldn’t place it above ST09, but it’s a better movie than any of the TNG ones, yes. Including First Contact.
Controversial Opinion - FC gets a lot of love, but I think it’s just as much of a turd as it’s three fellows.
"THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE" and "BALANCE OF TERROR" are my absolute favorites of TOS! ALWAYS a rewatch when they appear on tv.

Here's a hot take: Janeway was negligent by destroying the array, and not trying to use it to get home.
The destruction of the NCC-1701 was seriously dramatic climactic and apoplectic. Shocking too.
Every show and movie after that featured the destruction of the main spaceship, but none caused such impact.
Great scene.
Also the balls of Harve Bennet: if the movie hadnt been lucrative, the studio wouldnt order a ST4 and the ending of the series would have been horrible: the Enterprise destroyed, Spock brain-damaged, Kirk and the gang's careers in Starfleet ruined, etc
Spock is not exactly ‘brain-damaged’ at the end of TSFS.
From a cinematic perspective I can give TMP an edge as it is the more epic film, especially after Spock's mind meld scene.
However, the character work early on handicaps investment.
