Night Court revival

My cable company finally worked out it's issues with their NBC distributor and we got caught up last night.

Was it ever previously established that Roz is gay?

I saw an interview with Marsha Warfield where she said everyone in the cast and crew knew she was a lesbian almost from day one, but chose not to say anything to the press out of respect for her privacy.

She only came out publicly few years ago after she returned to stand up.

It's remarkable to me how much the culture has changed in my lifetime. Once, LGBTQ people were totally erased in the media, except to demonize them or mock them. Then they were talked about mostly in issue episodes and the fact that they were gay was a big deal. Now we just get romance and relationship stories that are written the same way regardless of the respective genders of the partners.

For some reason, NBC.com keeps locking more and more of its shows so I can't see them until 8 days after broadcast, so I only just caught last week's episode about the bureaucrat making Dan take on her son as a mentor. Not a very good one, and kind of lacking focus, given how hard it was to think of a description of what it was about.

They don't seem to be adding Gary Anthony Williams to the main cast, and they're still talking about Flobert being only a fill-in clerk. I wonder if it'll be like Murphy Brown's secretary where every new clerk they try turns out to be terrible for some reason.

I paused the look at the poster of the Bill of Rights behind Dan's shoeshine stand, and it's misprinted. The text of "Amendment 2" is incomplete and the entirety of the Second Amendment is listed under "Amendment 3." So it mentions the right to bear arms twice in a row, which is kind of disquieting. I wondered if it might be some kind of creepy sight gag where it's just the Second Amendment over and over, like the Republican version of the Bill of Rights, but what I could see of the other amendments seemed accurate. So that's just weird.

There was an article some time ago on Cracked.com about how the same newspaper prop has appeared in movies and television for over 50 years and gave a list.
I suspect that the Bill of Rights is a similar prop that has been reused over and over in various productions and is not to be examined too closely.

Nyambi Nyambi (Mike & Molly, The Good Fight) is the new court clerk and series regular.

Hm. I saw him in the last season of Titans, and he voiced Martian Manhunter in the animated adaptation of The Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen, but I don't have a vivid memory of him. Interesting that he's succeeding Gary Anthony Williams, who's also got a few DC voice roles on his resume.

Ed O'Neill has been reading the same newspaper since day one of Married with Children.

The new court clerk is adequate. I actually prefer Neil and may be one of the few fans who actually enjoyed him but if he's gone from the show then his replacement will probably do just fine.

This and the following week's episode were fun...felt like classic Night COurt to me. I have not watched many sit com episodes on a regular basis for like 30 years, and certainly not regularly like I am with Night COurt. 2nd season feels where more solid than 1st season (which was still good).

And the current episode was also a lot of fun...especially making fun of Abby's vocabulary (and her "full name")

While that certainly would have been a great ongoing joke, you clearly missed the news about the new clerk.

You know this is a comedy right, and not a documentary?

If it's not too relevent to the episode, i really don't care. And neither should you. It's a comedy.

he's got a Mac / Straight man kinda vibe to him. And as they noted bow he has had a bunch of different jobs, i am assuming they will pull out whatever is needed for the situation if they need a "solution" to a "problem" . ALso, him having 2 kids can also give him an excuse to not appear in an episode if the actor as another gig they need to do during filming of Night Court.[/QUOTE]

Finally remembered to check out last week's episode. A good debut for Nyambi Nyambi as Wyatt. He's less zany than I would've expected, but it might work well to have someone more grounded to bring balance to this bunch of madcaps. That was sort of Mac's role in the original, come to think of it.

Beyond that, it was a pretty fun episode with some effective wackiness. This is the second time this season (after the Xmas special) that they've done a mystery plot that worked pretty well.

I did feel Dan was maybe a bit out of character, with his overconfident cluelessness about matching wits with the hacker, and with his Monk fanfic at the end. (Well, yes and no. He doesn't seem like the fanfic type, but I can totally buy him being insensitive enough to want to "normalize" Monk and remove his OCD.)

On this week's episode, nice to see Flobert still hanging around, and that whole subplot, while not being very original, was still very entertaining thanks to the great performances.

Not among my favorites of the relaunch thus far but I did emit a few genuine LOLs.

Wait! They made a joke about magicians' assistants and Abracadabra Stone just lets it go by?!? C'MON REF! WHERE'S THE FOUL?

"This obituary is from tomorrow!"

I like Wyatt. The Flobert story line was cute. It's mostly just a dumb show with jokes. Perfect!

Two episodes in and I'm already liking Wyatt. I know I'm one of the few who misses Neil but Wyatt is a good replacement.

Unrequited love in the work place is a grenade in 2022.

There was a fair chance Abby could have lost her job, through no fault of her own, after shenanigans, if Neil announced his true feelings.

But then Harry briefly dated a hooker, so they are just making shit up about appropriateness.
