Spoilers MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN Review Thread

Animated shows don’t really have those restrictions. They can add anyone they want

Well, usually. There was a time when no production, animated or live action, was allowed to use Wonder Woman except as a lead character, which was why she never showed up in the DC Animated Universe until Justice League and never appeared on Smallville except as a passing mention in a newspaper headline. It was a rule intended to make sure Wonder Woman wasn't diminished as a character by being reduced to a supporting role, but it backfired by keeping her largely absent from DC screen productions for decades. Although that rule stopped applying some years ago.

But yeah, WB's weirdness about allowing competing versions of a character only seems to apply to live-action productions. Which is why we've had a ton of live-action Batman-adjacent shows without Batman in the same span of time that we've had a ton of different animated versions of Batman.

Very powerful episode this week, as the General -- whose first name is confirmed to be Sam -- shows Superman the events that brought him to Earth, and it sure looks like a Kryptonian invasion attempt, which gives Clark a crisis of faith that's very well played by Jack Quaid.

Although the robots had Brainiac's 3-circle emblem, so I'm guessing it was Brainiac that destroyed Krypton and tried to invade Earth, and maybe Jor-El was responsible for shutting down his portal, sending Kal-El through first.

The Japanese influence is stronger than ever in the climax, as Parasite-Ivo's tech suit grows into a full-on daikaiju, and Lois & Jimmy do an Ultraman Tiga-ish finale where they rally the people to stand with Superman and give him the strength to prevail. Well, okay, technically it's to take Parasite's strength away, but there's some psychological rallying too.

I have to wonder, though, if it's wise for Jimmy & Lois to out themselves publicly as Superman's best pals. I mean, everyone at the Planet (at least Perry and the reporters we've met) knows they hang out with Clark Kent all the time, so it can't be hard to put two and one together.

I get distracted by how much Parasite-EvaIvo looks like Eva 01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Also, a live-action verison of Jimmy Olsen that did the exact stuff and acts the same way seen in the animation would be hilarious.

So I guess today's episode 10 is the season finale? The trio finally gets promoted to reporters, the General is outed as Lois's dad, Kal-El's huge ship is destroyed, and Clark still doesn't have his answers about his origins, aside from Jor-El having learned enough English to say "My son." (Not crazy about the Kryptonian word for kryptonite being "kryptonite." Granted that this show's Kryptonian is a lot like Greek and might have the -ite suffix, but why would they name one specific mineral compound after their entire planet? Although I guess tellurium is technically named "earthium," though that's a misnomer since it's far more rare on Earth than in space.)

This show is certainly doing some novel things with the Superman concept. It still looks like Clark was sent to Earth as part of an invasion force, but how does Jor-El sending his infant son to Earth fit into that? As for the guy leading the invasion, Brainiac apparently works for him, and since his last word in the episode was "kneel," it's pretty easy to guess who's in that suit.

I think Jimmy becoming rich is based on a storyline from the comics, but I don't quite recall.

Both the "New 52" and the more recent Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen maxiseries by Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber have played with the idea of Jimmy being rich (or "from money").

Yeah, Jimmy is apparently co-heir to the same fortune as Lex Luthor. He even becomes the new owner of the Daily Planet.

Oh yeah, I think I remember reading something about Lex Luthor being dismayed to learn he was related to Jimmy Olsen.

I think Jimmy said he got $5.6 million for Flamebird. That's not quite "super rich," but I assume his investments will skyrocket in value by the end of the show.

Did they mention what happened to Cat Grant or are we to just assume that the Chief got his job back after Superman stopped Parasite?

We saw Cat, Steve Lombard, and Ronni Troupe congratulating Clark, Jimmy, and Lois on their promotions. Do you mean Vicki Vale?

Oh, sorry. I meant Vicki Vale. I thought she got the editor-in-chief job.

I had to look it up to refresh my memory... Vale did use her anti-Superman story as a way to get a promotion, but it was to editor-in-chief of the Gotham Gazette, not the Daily Planet.

Incidentally, the inevitable has happened. Nine weeks ago, I thought this show's Clark Kent sounded like Lower Decks' Boimler, but I've just started rewatching Lower Decks season 3, and now I think Boimler sounds like Clark Kent.

Is that Zod working with Braniac?
I wonder how the designer/writer that came up with the 3-Dot motif for braniac feels that it has become so intwined with the character?

The "kneel" suggests so, and the sigil looks like it might be House of Zod, though I didn't get a good look at it.

Didn't it originate in Superman: The Animated Series? So it would've been Bruce Timm or one of his team. Although it clearly owes something to Jack Kirby and his use of circle-and-line symbols to represent alien or futuristic technology.
