Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I don't recall ever hearing that he'd be back in a regular or non-makeup role, only that Season 1 wasn't the end of his Star Trek career. I think anything more specific was fan speculation.
Funny, I remember being mocked by certain posters that he wasn't really left out of the regular salary his non-disabled coworkers were getting. As a disabled person myself it's a touchy issue for me. Now the story's that he was never promised a regular role. In that case I'll bring back my complaint that it's a bad look for a disabled actor to be pulled out of a regular job on a hit show ("planned ahead of time" or not) and it feels disingenuous that the counter-arguments are that these issues are supposed to be placated with a token guest part.

Just to go on the record: IMO - They are using Kirk way too much. It seems like Pike is being pushed to the side somewhat.

This bullshit again?

Pike's like Obi-Wan. Kirk's Anakin without the whole turning to the dark side thing. We can have more than one hero character with an important future to follow.

I guess that makes Spock...Padme?

So fanwank is OK so long as it isn't taken seriously?
It's "OK" as long as it isn't the whole thing.

It's like a cake. Fanwank should never be anything more than frosting. Supplementary. Like how Star Wars does it. The problem with Picard is the nostalgia was the whole batter that had none of the other necessary ingredients: good characterization, a well-constructed plot, subtext. So the cake ended up as a densely dry disaster. Some fans gobbled up the frosting: "Oh my God it's the First Contact music! Squeeee!" and allowed themselves to be hoodwinked by a bunch of creatively defunct hacks.

Some of us chose not to.

Indeed. I'm not anti-nostalgia but very much not wanting just nostalgia.

I think the only piece of nostalgia that worked for me was: (The rest in Spoiler Code)

Ro's return. I didn't know I wanted to see the consequences of post preemptive strike and how they did it was great and a logical progression of that storyline.

The rest of the season was nice and it was significantly better than Season 2, but I think I liked Season 1 more. Star Trek tends to be trapped in this nostalgia rut, which is probably why I liked Prodigy as much as I did. Yes there was Janeway and Chakotay, but it felt new and fresh because it provided an outsider's perspective on the Federation.

Well, I´m thinking we are getting an overdose of Uhura... It´s becoming repetitive and tedious to hear that "she is super" in almost all episodes.
Talking about episode 7, I think it´s a "watch and forget". It´s far away from the best ones. Just one thing caught my attention: when Boimler says to Pike that you never know when it´s the last chance to celebrate your birthday. Looks like the Pike´s accident is coming. Kirk being more present, also reinforces it.
Will Pike come back for season 3?

This is going to be one of the most unforgotten episodes in the nearly-sixty year history of Star Trek.

I guarantee you that any convention you go to - if you do that sort of thing - from now until the end of humanity, this episode will be playing somewhere in some programming room and in dozens of hotel rooms and on a bunch of people's personal devices as well as to attract people to merchandise tables. The live-action LD uniforms will be ubiquitous. It's going to be memed and quoted more than "The Trouble With Tribbles." Because it's funny, it's a metacommentary on Star Trek as a whole, and it's about Star Trek fans.

Maybe, it can be true in the context of american culture, but it isn´t the same all around the world. ;)

No, it's going to be true from here to the moons of Nebulon and beyond the Antares maelstrom. Have you not seen Galaxy Quest?

I watched Galaxy Quest one time, and don´t liked.
It isn´t popular here in Brasil. As I said, some movies fits very well inside the culture of your native country, but not all around the world.

Agreed. I wonder if part of the issue some have with this episode is that it hits too close to home.

No, my issue is the plot is too thin - it's too contrived and clearly pieced together for fan service with nothing but Easter eggs and self references, it's not funny or even fun. Worst episode of any star trek ever. Note that that's just my opinion. But that rank seems likely to change one spot after the musical. ..

No, some people just don't want Star Trek to be funny. It's serious goddamn business, and a comedy is a wasted story!
