Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I enjoy musicals.

I've performed in them.

I'm not convinced of this in Trek.

I mean, this is a definite departure from the creative conceits that underlie the vast majority of Star Trek episodes. Star Trek traditionally goes for a sci-fi version of Realism/Naturalism, and musicals, of course, are definitely Not That. But ultimately, I don't think it's any more of a departure from Sci-Fi Realism/Naturalism than, say, Lower Decks using the animated adult sitcom format. Ultimately genres and formats are just different ways of reaching emotional truth.

Once More With Feeling is the absolute gold standard for musical episodes. Don't think any other attempt has even come close to reaching those heights, but we live in hope.

If it turns out terribly, I'll at least applaud the attempt... even if I don't end up revisiting it that often.

Yeah, even if "Subspace Rhapsody" sucks, I really respect their willingness to take creative risks and step so far outside of Star Trek's safe zone. That's something I really respect about Kurtzman's tenure as Trek Head Honcho -- he's willing to let his shows creatively experiment in a way that Berman almost never was.

I was in a stage production of Grease in my early 20s. While that was 20 years ago, I am over Grease.

Just like I’m over Rick Berman.

This is gonna cause a few heads to explode, I think.

Dave Cullen will have an especially miserable, limp whinge about how un-Trek the whole thing is on this one.

Even thought I absolutely love, love, love SNW I don't usually come over to this forum, just because I can't begin to keep up with the conversations about new episodes, but this new brought me in here.
I love musicals, and for a long time now I've thought a Star Trek musical could be a lot of fun, so learning we're actually getting one has made me very, very happy. This has pretty much shot right up to the top of most anticipated entertainment for the rest of the year. Between this and the Lower Decks crossover, this is probably going to be one of the wildest seasons of Trek we've ever gotten.

I'm all in for this because I love musicals and Buffy's OMWF was perfection. When I saw the trailer for Subspace Rhapsody I immediately thought of it, said to myself, well, sure, but Buffy had that demon of week --

oh right, aliens, doh.
