Technically we've had both this season z including first contact this episode.
But the first contact had to take a sideline to spocks small bladder.

I do agree with this sentiment. It's been fun so far, but we don't want this to turn into a soap opera. Let's start making some first contacts and blowing up some Klingon shit.
Pike isn't a shitty cock, and that's actually portrayed in canon. The SNW episode Serene Squall had the Pirates loving Pikes cooking to the point that he was able to get them to mutiny against their current captain/cook.
In this episode, T'Pring's father also was showing to clearly enjoy Pike's cooking of Vulcan food as well.![]()
It's time for these guys to start exploring deep space.
Watched it again.
Star Trek has no rights to be this good.
There’s the usual good Star Trek and then there’s this.
It’s one of those rare instances of everything just coalescing. Music, writing, direction and acting just stacking up neatly.
I can’t find anything to dislike about it. This season has pretty much been a home run so far.
The OST. Man, when you tune into it then there’s shades of TOS woven throughout in the form of little leitmotifs and echoes.
There’s the Spock in the bathroom scene that starts sideways, then flips to the right way, before revealing we are looking at a reflection until we see the real Spock. The whole scene does not have to be as cleverly shot as it is. Peck could have solved it without, but it’s those little directorial flourishes that lift this show above.
The whole package is just incredible. Im basking in it for now, ‘cause there’s no way next weeks can top it, but wow. I have to watch it again tomorrow. When I’m not watching it, it always seems to be turning around in my head somehow anyway.
I'm late to the thread, so I didn't check the context (e.g. whether we are collectively at a point where we are "Threshold"/"Spock's Brain"ing this episode, in the, you know, "so bad it's good" kind of way), but... you're being sarcastic, right? I hope?

Amok Time is almost ten years later. A lot can happen between a couple in less time than that. So what happened in the episode about the 'T'Pring stuff'?A thoroughly "meh" episode. Ethan Peck does a really good Spock and while it's somewhat amusing to see him play around with the character, it's nothing we haven't seen before. And I really dislike the T'Pring stuff as it flies in the face of "Amok Time" and also the Vulcans' keeping their rituals close to themselves seem to have been thrown out the window.
At least the aliens were a bit interesting.
2/10.
You could, I dunno, look at the poll results on page one to get your bearings on how the episode is being received. It would be faster than needling @Richard S. Chapel is TOS is not often forthcoming in her motivations but SNW suggests she understands Spock a lot better than we give her credit - her comment in Naked Time, "The others might believe that but not me," has far more context. When she asks him to call her Christine in Amok time, there is much more context now - an attempt to move the dial - to shift more towards their old friendship. Possibly she is the only person on board who knows about Ponn Farr, if not the side effects, but keeps his counsel. Her surprise at seeing T'Pring is more - whoa what's she doing back? I wonder if they will avoid doing scenes with Uhura and T'Pring in SNW but that ship may already have sailed.A thoroughly "meh" episode. "Burned" as distinct from what? It was better than most Trek, so...I liked it. Kind of surprised they burned an episode on something like this but it worked and had a classic feel to it.
People being attracted to other people based on their clothing? Shocking!
I usually don't like Star Trek comedies, but this one was really fun with some great performances and added to Spock's development. I put aside concerns over "canon" last season, because I don't feel like wasting the brain power to smooth over the differences between a show written today vs one done in 1966-69. Because unless Spock does a mind meld with Chapel erasing all this and making her, as Majel herself said, a drip, this Christine is radically different ("have you ever been engaged, Mr. Spock?" "Yes. You were there."). Don't get me wrong, I prefer this version. Jess Bush is always great to watch and is one of my favorite cast members. I could watch her all day.
Anson Mount is hilarious as the Coolest Captain in Starfleet, going along with the scheme (I really need a cosplay of that updated green wraparound he wears). T'Pring's dad is hysterical. Mom was...well she would have fit in perfectly in any of the Berman Era Trek's. Really, for all of this "wow just like TOS!" we get for this series, this was a TNG or a DS9 in all but the characters.
The climax was earned but I can see why it can be problematic. Spock is, in all honesty, being unfaithful. But that's another emotional hurdle for him to tackle and a portent of the heartbreak to come. If they follow canon.
I don't consider it one of the best ever, but it was fun like "Little Green Men" or "Deja Q." A nice way to pass the time. There isn't an overall season arc to get to, so I don't think episodes like this are a waste of a short episode count. I was entertained.

Spock (quoting the immortal words of Ross Geller): "We were on a break!"
