I don't think they'll go into any kind of racist territory. My thinking is that they're dressed this way in line with the warrior we saw outside the fortress in "The Cage".

Yeah, my concern is just that it's very easy for even very well-meaning people with no racist intent whatsoever to accidentally drift into stereotype territory. Fingers crossed they avoid that.

I understand. But the Trek people are generally pretty careful about that nowadays.

The description of "the Kalar" in the script contained no visual descriptions referring to culture or ethnicity, referring to the character as Neanderthal-like and animalistic.* But GR approved the budget friendly "Hollywood Mongol" costuming.


*The caveat here is that the image of neanderthals that entered the popular imagination and still sticks incorporated a lot of what folks would have recognized in other contexts as racial caricatures.
