Discovery ended much better than the season as a whole. It would have been a great 10 episode season with good editing.

Generous. I was going to suggest that someone good could fanedit this into two movies.

6 episode season at most.

I really wanted the DMA to be a future ... DM. I really wanted the 10-C to have created the Doomsday Machine 1000 years before. That thing as a space-mining vessel would have made some sense to me. YMMV of course.

*shrugs* I mean, maybe the Doomsday Machine was a primitive prototype for mining boronite that Species 10-C lost control of at some point in the distant past. I don't think there's anything in DIS S4 or "The Doomsday Machine" that precludes that possibility.

I liked it, a solid ending to S4 and the best season finale this show has produced by a mile. The show seems to be stabilizing and finding its identity under Paradise, which is a welcome development.

I don't have any significant issues with S4 and I think it's a huge improvement over S3. I particularly enjoyed the increased focus on sci fi concepts like the DMA, Zora's sentience (which I thought was very well done) and the communication method with 10-C. I also thought the acting was much better (or at least, the stories were generally focused on the stronger actors). Giving Book a big role was a great move. Tarka, Vulcan president, Federation president, etc. were all great as well.

S1 remains my favorite season of the series but S4 is a close second.

I really enjoyed it. For me this episode had it all, intrigue, mystery, and had me very engaged emotionally. Really glad Book stuck around. I think the DMA was visually stunning, that whole arc was really great.
Best season so far for me.

So it came to end...seemingly ages ago now.

I would have to rank this as one of the top 5 TV first-contact stories I've ever seen, and I've seen way too many of them. Despite a fluffy middle that never quite devolves into filler like the old-age trek often did, this season ranks pretty high on the scale. One episode feels like old-school Lem (Silent Star), and another makes for a top notch AI ethics episode, though I could quibble with the conclusion a bit, it's an effective personal identity/identification episode, and functions for most in that manner.

In a way, it's hard to encapsulate it all with this finale because every episode did heavy pulling, and it very much seems like one story and almost begs to be viewed that way.

Go big or go home is the motto: throw in some Dyson Rings, Black Hole engineering, and truly alien species. This show is the definition of contemporary sci-fi.

10/10 for the finale. 9/10 for the season.

Sounds like Matalas wank. I'll take the good ideas we did get.

I am glad they went with what they did. Season 4 was great. I love the whole first contact thing and how it was done. They were for the first time in ages a truly alien looking species and well done to everyone.

Season five "sniff sniff" there will be no more..... That will be sad

Well now we know the Discovery finale was light years better than the Picard finale.

I don't see it as a competition really, the franchise is my favorite, but we were set up to believe Picard was LOTR, and we got Krull.

I don't really see how "Coming Home" is comparable to "The Last Generation." Why would you compare a series finale to a season finale?

I wouldn't compare it for a country mile at all. To me, Picard set out to do two things and succeeded better at one of them than the other. Discovery is something else entirely and I prefer it not get lumped in with Picard. It's not the same thing at all.

Though the two finales are quite different, they are both overly sentimental happy endings where the teases of important character deaths and lasting consequences are ultimately just that - teases.

They're both big "finales", though DSC wasn't a series finale.

I think Discovery was more successful. Take away the fan wank and you have about 1/3rd of a real episode for Picard (am I being too generous?).
