Okay, so that was better than it’s been since the Ro episode.
Generally, this season for me, has been mixed to not great. Plot contrivances and nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia, too many characters, no real stakes, no sense of urgency. It just fell flat in a lot of places. In this episode, we still saw a lot of that but the resolution save one bit actually worked for me.
The Ugly: The Borg Queen. Most definitely.
The Bad: I still don’t buy the changeling/Borg team-up. I was hoping for more cameos. DS9 has been pretty heavily ignored in CBSTrek (save LDS) and I really was hoping they’d be represented here somehow. The continued low-stakes of all of this. I mean, show of hands… How many people were actually worried for either Earth or any of our heroes? No. Me neither. Special Counselor Ensign Jack Crusher? Yeah, that didn’t work for me. Q — I love Q. I love DeLancie. This was unnecessary. Whole season two was pretty meh, I liked his resolution. I don’t think we needed to go here. Needle drop musical cues, too many references to old things, poker, blah, blah, blah. I don’t need to go through my list of general grievances against this season again. I did that above.
The big Shaw-level no for me was renaming the Titan Enterprise. Stupid, stupid fanfic level bullshit. Titan saved the fucking day in the end along with the Enterprise. Renaming her steps on Titans legacy. Dumb.
The Good: Anton Chekov. Real Tuvok. A lot of the character stuff here. Captain Seven. First officer Raffi. Worf and Riker’s banter. Worf sleeping. Worf and Raffi. Deanna and Data. Shaw’s performance evaluation. Someone above mentioned that it seemed like Beverly and Picard were together. Thankfully I did not see that. I’m still hopeful he’s with Laris even though we didn’t get to see her. Oh and goodbye to the fucking Borg! Let’s never use them again.
Overall this season was fine, passable entertainment if you turn your brain off but nothing to write home about. It’s a better ending for the TNG crew. I honestly don’t need to see any of them again. This was sufficient. But the concept as an end all of this era? I don’t know. There are some aspects I’d like to follow up on, primarily Bajor and Cardassia. But I don’t need a whole series to just follow up on these things. Maybe a movie. Maybe a miniseries.
Overall I give this one a 7. The season as a whole a 6. Au revoir Jean-Luc Picard. Au revoir, TNG.
