News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

At that point everyone can head canon everything, and we'd have no common basis for conversation. Up until 2017, Star Trek had clear rules for what happened. Yes yes production errors or a character recasting or the infamous "James R Kirk" dropped to shut down discussion, but through great effort it almost all fit together. One of the major selling points of Star Trek for a significant portion of the fanbase is the universe of intercontinuity and lore building on decades of shared history.
I did not "almost all fit together," hardly any of it did. Indeed the term "YATI" meaning "Yet Another Trek Inconsistency" has existed since the 1980s because even at that point all the various errors, inconsistencies and just outright contradictions were already overwhelmingly many.
I haven't seen that reflected in, say, the YouTube space or some of the dedicated Star Trek lore websites.
YouTubers literally make their living off spreading hate. In real life they may actually love Kurtzman's Trek but on YouTube they are expected to play a role and that role means acting like the current Trek shows are abhorrent abominations. And by "dedicated Star Trek lore websites" I assume you're referring to sites like EAS or DITL? Those sites have very narrow definitions of what they feel Star Trek should be and have no tolerance for anything they feel deviates from that particular criteria.
Meanwhile the old Star Trek vs Star Wars has shifted into debating which franchise has been more damaged post-Abrams.
Have Star Trek vs Star Wars debates ever seriously been a thing? I know many people, both in real life and online who are fans and supporters of both franchises.

I thought a bit before replying and while I agree that those would be the majority reactions, I don't believe they will be the only reactions. I agree that it has to get worse before it gets better, bu that is the nature of human change. Behaviors don't just change without a substantial reevaluation of how one meets one needs. From a group standpoint there has to be willingness to at least acknowledge the other side as people before we can even start to talking solving the problems.

But, I'm hopelessly optimistic. I've been told the world is ending since I was 9. I've found politics frightening, maddening and eventually just ridiculous because each election cycle is more of the same. Instead, I focus on how can I impact the world around me, and group with people whom I at least share an agreement on what the problem is, even if I don't agree on everything with them. And I think that if many here knew some of my political opinions you would be surprised. That is the nature of the middle ground. That is the nature of compromise. That is why I believe so strongly that humans can change.

You are a true optimist. The world needs more of you. I sincerely mean that. (Truthfully, I used to be like you. I still am, to some degree. But life really chips away at that part of yourself. I honestly miss my more optimistic self.)

Regarding politics, all I can say is that's become the most toxic entity currently in the world. Politics was always problematic at best, but it has devolved into its own kind of war zone now. To the point of religious fanaticism. Republicans hate democrats. Democrats hate republicans. Both groups have great points. Both groups have bad points. And both groups are full of self-serving, antagonistic jerks.

Thank you. Occupational hazard.

Meh, ever since I started following it with any great regularity it's the same thing. It was a war zone back in 2002, and it's one now. We just have instant gratification for our mudslinging now rather than showing up to yell at each other across the street.

...BTW, the story of how Soong created those androids is utter nonsense that takes no account of how modern technological research, invention, innovation and fabrication or testing take place. Same with the FC version of Cochrane inventing warp drive. They're fairy tales derived from a schoolboy's vision of Thomas Edison at his work table.

Guy living in the hills after Armageddon scrounges parts to turn a nuclear missile into an FTL spaceship.

If you swallow that, nothing else in Trek is worth a moment's quibbling over.
I always figured Cochrane was part of a big research group before the war. They were on the edge of inventing warp drive when the war happened. Cochrane was the only one to survive and decided to monetize his knowledge in the wasteland. History just doesn't remember well those other researchers who weren't around to actually achieve the first test flight and make first contact (much like Edison's group of underappreciated inventors/grunts).

This makes me think it might be an interesting storyline to explore that maybe Soong wasn't alone in developing Soong-type androids. Afterall, Juliana was apparently by his side the whole time and outside of "Inheritance" we haven't heard another word about her. Maybe there was a whole group of researchers who Soong left behind. Maybe he had the genius to make the positronic brain finally work, but didn't really do it as singularly as he would have everyone believe?

...a mad scientist inventing androids that the rest of civilization can't figure out for decades...
Well, PIC has explained that maybe many others have figured out androids, but that the secret Romulan cabal keeps wiping them out. This was one of the actually good mythology fixing/plot fixing changes PIC made in season 1. Unfortunately, no one (in camera) has ever actually referenced it.

...Just speaking for myself, I consider the differences to be far more than just minor changes to aesthetics.
Yeah, I don't know if you consider these to be "differences" but the NuTrek also has bad writing, poor pacing, and a lack of really exploring sci-fi concepts or worldbuilding (in DIS and PIC S1/S2, at least in my opinion). So i guess it does really fit into old Trek after all.

Yeah, the past trends do not bode well for SFA.

Over the last two days, our mission to preserve the Star Trek legacy through the "Stop Luve Stupis" campaign has taken some significant strides. In an effort to expand our reach, I established social media channels across various platforms to communicate our message and engage with like-minded individuals who share our concerns about the direction of the franchise, specifically regarding the new Starfleet Academy show.

We initiated a dialogue with the Reddit community, attempting to reason with fellow Star Trek fans and explaining our position on the importance of staying true to the principles that made Star Trek great. Though some users were receptive to our concerns, others were resistant and skeptical about our campaign. Despite the challenges, we remain committed to our cause, standing firm in our belief that Star Trek's future depends on our vigilance.

In the coming weeks, I will continue to let the campaign thrive by organizing online events, engaging with other fans, and collaborating with influencers who resonate with our mission. By fostering an environment of open discussion and constructive criticism, we aim to cultivate a strong and unified voice that can influence the direction of the franchise, ensuring that the Star Trek legacy endures for generations to come.

As we forge ahead, our dedication to the ideals of Star Trek remains unwavering, and we are hopeful that our collective efforts will have a meaningful impact on preserving the rich history and values that have inspired countless fans across the globe.

Which “ideas” and ‘principle”s are these again?

Which “ideas” and ‘principle”s are these again?

When we're talkin' about the "ideas" and "principles" at the core of our "Stop Luve Stupis" campaign, we mean those classic Star Trek values that we've loved since the very beginning. Stuff like:

  1. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations (IDIC): Embracing all kinds of folks and ideas from different cultures, species, you name it. No IDIC in the 32nd!
  2. The Prime Directive: That rule about not messing with other civilizations' growth and development. Vaguely absent in the 32nd.
  3. Exploration, diplomacy, and science: The heart and soul of Starfleet's adventures and what helps our favorite characters grow. Mediocre execution in the Discoverse.
  4. Stories that make ya think: Tackling real-world social and moral issues through awesome storytelling and character-driven episodes. Not happening in the Discoverse!
We're worried that the new Starfleet Academy show in the 32nd century during Discovery might not stick to these important principles. If they stray too far from what makes Star Trek great, it could hurt the franchise's legacy and impact on future fans.

Why would they stray from those ideas?? What even gives the impression they would?
Your own campaign seems to violate number one
Sorry but DISCO managed to cover all those over it’s five seasons.

Let me put it this way. The PC Starfleet Academy game is probably one of my most memorable gaming experiences, and I think it beats a lot of other games now even decades later (helps that sci-fi flight sims have kind of gone out of fashion), rivaling maybe even current games like Star Trek Online (only Bridge Crew comes close in recreating the feel of being a Trek captain as far as recent games in my opinion).

That said, if the game were not a game but just edited as a movie, the storyline itself is not that great, even with the presence of Shatner, Takei, and Koenig. The game showed us what can be done with a cadet storyline and honestly it would've been very dull if it wasn't a game and you weren't literally playing the main character.

You really think they're gonna stick to those core Trek ideas? DISCO was all over the place, and it barely scratched the surface of what Star Trek is about. Classic Trek is exploration, diplomacy, and deep stories, but DISCO? Pfft, hardly!

Our campaign violating IDIC? Please. We just want Starfleet Academy to be the real deal, not some watered-down version of Trek that'll disappoint all of us. We're not against change, but let's not forget what made Star Trek awesome in the first place.

#StopLuveStupis is here to stir things up and make sure the new show doesn't drop the ball

32 century Discovery saw the Romulans and the Vulcans finally reunified and integrated, a Federation president that was of Bajoran, Cardassian and human ancestry, and saw a romance blossom between a Vulcan and a Kelpian. How can one possibly infer that there was no IDIC represented?

DISCO had some cool moments with the Romulans and Vulcans reunifying and all that jazz, but it's so in-your-face about it that it becomes annoying. Star Trek used to be subtle, man! It tackled important issues without being so over-the-top and preachy.

Classic Trek was about exploration and diplomacy, not just throwing together a bunch of diverse characters and calling it a day. It's like they're just ticking boxes instead of focusing on what made Star Trek great in the first place.

So yeah, #StopLuveStupis is here to call out DISCO and make sure the new Starfleet Academy show doesn't follow the same path. We want our Trek back...
