I’m surprised Starfleet considered replacing the California class with drone ships: sure, they can be great at some things but they obviously can’t replace a crew when diplomacy is concerned.
Cool that they used the M5 interface for the control console and a ship called Corpus Christi is really fun.

Eh, I don't think so.
The Callie class being an 'embarrasement' for SF doesn't really make sense.
LD did take some 'liberties' in describing how SF works which doesn't mesh well into the whole notion of what UFP is... and this could be mostly for joke aspect.
I would surmise that the California class were indeed designed to handle second contact. Essentially 'follow up' tasks from previous missions (Mariner did mention that SF was bad on followup to begin with, so perhaps this was their way of learning from their mistakes).
Not every starship class can be the coolest and most prestigious.
Then the two remaining ships would have likely either smashed into the stations internal shields, or they would have been let through because they are SF.
I mean, the show has been consistent since episode 1 that Starfleet disdains Second Contact and considers it busywork. There's never been a single hint they get the respect they deserve.
And it's not just done for jokes but whole plot points like the plan to replace them all with drones.
Didn't say it has to be (in fact most aren't)... but for the Cali class specifically to be an 'embarrasement' for SF and for people in SF and UFP to demean the crews of Cali class in the manner we saw? That doesn't track.
"Someone has to be the worst." Basically, there's got to be something at the bottom since not everything can be the top.
But that doesn't necessarily mean they saw the Cali class as an embarrasement to the fleet as a whole.
Just the tasks it was initially designed to do... aka, second contact and follow-up (they find it tedious work - but come on, even SF has to admit that followup is something that's NEEDED).
The crews of Cali class ships would have likely then just been reassigned to other positions throughout the fleet anyway (ships that do higher mission profiles).
Phasers at warp are definitely possible and thus not a error: the whole point in TMP was that admiral Kirk ordered phasers at warp without knowing that they were not an option *in that specific situation* due to a characteristic of the new enterprise.
On another note, so Picard is an admiral already. I hoped to see him in command of the Enterprise one more time…And it makes perfect sense for him to fund archeological expeditions.
In my perception, the Californias are ships that people either get promoted from in a hurry or stick with for much of their careers out of genuine affection for the work.

Saving the relationship drama for next season? Though I wouldn't be surprised if the break-up gets confirmed in a single line. From Jennifer's expression when Mariner's back on the Cerritos, I'd say she knows that she was in the wrong, but she's also the only one who doesn't offer some form of reconciliation. The Lower Decks crew immediately apologizes to Mariner for not supporting her more, Freeman is ready to reinstate her into Starfleet at once, and Jennifer...just hides behind her drink. If she can't get over herself enough to offer an apology, then she's definitely not gf material.
And those are likely just the ones that were able to get to the battle site within hours-to-days. Probably dozens more stuck on assignment or otherwise out of easy reach.
I have the more cynical fact they never really wanted to do a romance with her and Mariner in the first place as they've stated they don't like doing those, so this is their way of giving a little then ending it.

Indeed. Of course, it's more interesting to me that in more enlightened future that some jobs are still regarded poorly. Though, even more interesting is the fact that, as established by Voyager, doing a tour in Starfleet ensured more access to more prestigious positions.
West might have had the weapon, but Cartwright was apparently the top dog of the operation. He is just as responsible as all the others who were in the conspiracy.
