What a great finale to a great season for a great show! Lower Decks is easily in my top three favorite series, and I'm so glad Mariner's back, and all is forgiven. It really is a case of "you don't know what you've got until it's gone."

I really laughed at the Shaxs scene where he finally gets his recommendation approved and gets to eject the warp core. The episode also does a solid job of explaining just how they're going to get into the AI situation, and why Starfleet went kind of batshit over it.

Great finale, can't wait for Season 4.

The USS Van Citters is probably named after

So many new names for the Cali class list

Not probably. It’s named for him.

Pretty shitty Starbase to be taken out by three ships so easily. DS9 would have lasted at least another few minutes. :)

Yeah, that didn't make sense.
What about shields? And only 2 phaser turrets on the whole starbase?
Come on.
The station's shields should have come online immediately after the Aledo opened fire on the upper section which destroyed Buenamigo's quarters.

Also starbase phasers should have been more powerful than what we saw.
But at least we now know that mushroom type starbases DO indeed pack weapons (at least some).

Finally, what the heck kind of torpedoes did the Aledo use?
Those seemed very powerful. Why aren't they in use throughout Starfleet?

Some episode thoughts:

1:] I'd argue that Buenamigo may be the most evil Admiral of them all since Cartwright. I’d argue that Admiral Kennelly, Admiral Pressman, and Admiral Satie have all been exceeded by Admiral Buenamigo. Pressman for example has a lot of people who agree with his belief that the Romulan Treaty and cloaking devices was a mistake (including the DS9 writers). However, Buenamigo straight up was willing to commit MASS MURDER (of Starfleet personnel no less) to get his drone project through.

2:] I don’t think there’s any surprise that Starfleet would be more willing to do automated Star Fleet vessels. Data, The Doctor, and even the EMH Mark II have all demonstrated that AI has gotten a bad rap and that they should possibly be reevaluated. I’d argue the Texas-class and Peanut Hamper may have gone a long way to Starfleet regaining its wariness of AI.

3:] Speaking of Picard tie-ins, if not for the fact that Badgey is all the evil you need, I’d wonder if the Zhat Vash had sabotaged the Texas project. After all, they have had people infiltrating Star Trek for years. I wouldn’t be surprised if a certain future “Vulcan” Admiral was on Buenamigo’s staff.

4:] Starfleet’s disdain for the California-class seems excessive and I’m wondering if there’s another story here because the Admirals seemed pretty eager to scrap an entire line of ships in exchange for the automated support class.

5:] While shipping is not the primary part of reviews, I think Jennifer’s look followed by Mariner walking right past her was something that spoke volumes. It also pretty much cements that their ship is dead and done rather than something they intend to revisit.

6:] I also like the fact that Mariner chooses to come back to Starfleet of her own accord. It's now something we understand that she has made a commitment of her own accord to.

Considering the Aledo almost knew all the weak points of a starbase, the first few phaser shots could have taken out most of its weapons.

Like in TWOK, Khan hit the Enterprise exactly where it would cripple them quickly because he studied the tech manuals long ago. A rogue A.I. can easily do that on a larger scale.

Admiral Dougherty aligned with Son'a criminals to expel the Ba'ku from their home planet but Dougherty did give off the impression he didn't intend for any harm to come to anybody during the process and looked genuinely dismayed at Ru'afo's excesses and his plot to remove the Ba'ku by force. Standing up to Ru'afo even got him killed.

Buenamigo is much worse. He did everything deliberately and didn't care if an entire Starfleet crew were killed in the process so long as he got the recognition and rewards for the Texas-class ship performing as intended. He's truly up there with other malevolent Starfleet officers like Ron Tracey.

Finally: an armada comprised entirely of one class of ship that people enjoy.
Something for the canon connections thread - a copy/paste fleet! (though the ships at least had different colours and crews).

Cluster torpedoes, splitting in multiple warheads. Of course, the lack of resistance from a Starbase and a Sovereign class (and the presence of all Cali's at once and no other ships other than the one Sovereign) serves the plot and isn't meant to be taken seriously.

.
Agreed that Buenamigo is very evil.

Automation gets a bad rap, partly because those people tend to go all or nothing with AI. There was no need for Buenamigo to give full control to the AI, he merely could have commanded to destroy the Cerritos like he did with the Breen vessels. You give good counterexamples, but I'd add that other Starfleet vessels are also capable of quasi-autonomous operations (orders from one person are sufficient, and those could even be standing orders without the person being present), usually without incident.

As for the Cali-class - those are not the glamorous vessels and probably not a good path for career advancement. Many of the admirals may see the whole class as a money drain on what they consider to be more valuable ships and projects.

The California Class is exactly what one would expect to be used by a Galactic Society that fully intends to support its member worlds and further its development.
Somebody has to make sure things are running smoothly once the first responders move on to the next discovery.

The explorer class of ships are the head but the support class of ships are the heart and soul of the Federation.

I'd argue even worse than Captain Tracey, because while he did kill a lot of Yangs, they were attacking the village he was in and was a threat to the lives of himself and the Kohms. At least there is an element of self-defense there.

Buenamigo is worse than the below admirals for these reasons...

Admiral Kennelly was honestly a moron for falling for the Cardassians' plot.

Admiral Satie and Admiral Pressman thought they were defending the Federation. The former using basically witchhunts, the latter gutting a treaty. We don't know if Satie got anyone killed, and the dead Pegasus crew was likely an accident.

Admiral Cartwiright is a question mark... he's part of a group that murdered the Klingon Chancellor, 2 Starfleet crewmen, and was about to kill the next speaker of the Klingon Empire. I lean toward Buenamigo being worse.

It seems like Admiral Freeman was bumrushed by the Admiral gathering and I wouldn’t be surprised if “Project: Flyby” had been expected to fail spectacularly and followed up by the Texas project succeeding well before there was ever an official hearing for it. There’s been a lot of foreshadowing in previous episodes that at least someone in Starfleet or possibly several someones hate the California class and want it gotten rid of (perhaps because they are weak, mass-produced, ill-prestigious vessels). Even Captain Gomez basically says that California class crews aren’t wanted on other vessels or they should be broken up.

I wouldn’t be surprised if future Expanded Universe people go with the idea the Cali-class was created for the Dominion War as prefabricated mass-produced junk for Starfleet and something that they are embarrassed by. “We couldn’t produce a bunch of Intrepid-class like we wanted and now we’re stuck with these things!”

They are the Corellian Corvettes of Trek.

I believe Colonel West was going to kill the Federation President to guarantee war with the Klingons.
