It seems like Admiral Freeman was bumrushed by the Admiral gathering and I wouldn’t be surprised if “Project: Flyby” had been expected to fail spectacularly and followed up by the Texas project succeeding well before there was ever an official hearing for it. There’s been a lot of foreshadowing in previous episodes that at least someone in Starfleet or possibly several someones hate the California class and want it gotten rid of (perhaps because they are weak, mass-produced, ill-prestigious vessels). Even Captain Gomez basically says that California class crews aren’t wanted on other vessels or they should be broken up.

I wouldn’t be surprised if future Expanded Universe people go with the idea the Cali-class was created for the Dominion War as prefabricated mass-produced junk for Starfleet and something that they are embarrassed by. “We couldn’t produce a bunch of Intrepid-class like we wanted and now we’re stuck with these things!”

They are the Corellian Corvettes of Trek.
They may be disliked, but they are obviously becoming the backbone of keeping the Federation going.

Cool episode, but a bit too predictable for me.
I’m surprised Starfleet considered replacing the California class with drone ships: sure, they can be great at some things but they obviously can’t replace a crew when diplomacy is concerned.

Cool that they used the M5 interface for the control console and a ship called Corpus Christi is really fun.

Shax finally gets his wish!

I wonder why the issue with Jennifer isn’t addressed at all.

8.

Eh, I don't think so.
The Callie class being an 'embarrasement' for SF doesn't really make sense.
LD did take some 'liberties' in describing how SF works which doesn't mesh well into the whole notion of what UFP is... and this could be mostly for joke aspect.

I would surmise that the California class were indeed designed to handle second contact. Essentially 'follow up' tasks from previous missions (Mariner did mention that SF was bad on followup to begin with, so perhaps this was their way of learning from their mistakes).

I mean, the show has been consistent since episode 1 that Starfleet disdains Second Contact and considers it busywork. There's never been a single hint they get the respect they deserve.

And it's not just done for jokes but whole plot points like the plan to replace them all with drones.

Not every starship class can be the coolest and most prestigious.

Didn't say it has to be (in fact most aren't)... but for the Cali class specifically to be an 'embarrasement' for SF and for people in SF and UFP to demean the crews of Cali class in the manner we saw? That doesn't track.

"Someone has to be the worst." Basically, there's got to be something at the bottom since not everything can be the top.

But that doesn't necessarily mean they saw the Cali class as an embarrasement to the fleet as a whole.
Just the tasks it was initially designed to do... aka, second contact and follow-up (they find it tedious work - but come on, even SF has to admit that followup is something that's NEEDED).

The crews of Cali class ships would have likely then just been reassigned to other positions throughout the fleet anyway (ships that do higher mission profiles).

Weird to see people walking in the tram tube. And phasers at warp? I always forget if we've seen that before. I feel like it was "an error" when it happened in Into Darkness?
Phasers at warp are definitely possible and thus not a error: the whole point in TMP was that admiral Kirk ordered phasers at warp without knowing that they were not an option *in that specific situation* due to a characteristic of the new enterprise.

On another note, so Picard is an admiral already. I hoped to see him in command of the Enterprise one more time…And it makes perfect sense for him to fund archeological expeditions.

In my perception, the Californias are ships that people either get promoted from in a hurry or stick with for much of their careers out of genuine affection for the work.

Also, in my perception, they've been around for as long as the Ambassador class. How they outlasted their peers-in-age...?

Mass produced junk for the Dominion War! After all, most Star Trek fans...I mean Federation citizens, don't even know they exist!

Saving the relationship drama for next season? Though I wouldn't be surprised if the break-up gets confirmed in a single line. From Jennifer's expression when Mariner's back on the Cerritos, I'd say she knows that she was in the wrong, but she's also the only one who doesn't offer some form of reconciliation. The Lower Decks crew immediately apologizes to Mariner for not supporting her more, Freeman is ready to reinstate her into Starfleet at once, and Jennifer...just hides behind her drink. If she can't get over herself enough to offer an apology, then she's definitely not gf material.

For those who care, here's the list of Cali-class ships that showed up:
USS Alhambra
USS Anaheim
USS Burbank
USS Carlsbad
USS Cerritos
USS Culver City
USS Eureka
USS Fresno
USS Inglewood
USS Merced
USS Mount Shasta
USS Oakland
USS Pacific Palisades
USS Redding
USS Riverside
USS Sacramento
USS San Clemente
USS San Diego
USS San Jose
USS Santa Monica
USS Sherman Oaks
USS Vacaville
USS Vallejo
USS West Covina
And those are likely just the ones that were able to get to the battle site within hours-to-days. Probably dozens more stuck on assignment or otherwise out of easy reach.

I have the more cynical fact they never really wanted to do a romance with her and Mariner in the first place as they've stated they don't like doing those, so this is their way of giving a little then ending it.

Yeah, that didn't make sense.
What about shields? And only 2 phaser turrets on the whole starbase?
Come on.
The station's shields should have come online immediately after the Aledo opened fire on the upper section which destroyed Buenamigo's quarters.

Also starbase phasers should have been more powerful than what we saw.
But at least we now know that mushroom type starbases DO indeed pack weapons (at least some).

Finally, what the heck kind of torpedoes did the Aledo use?
Those seemed very powerful. Why aren't they in use throughout Starfleet?
I think Spacedock around Earth is the only one not to have weapons as it’s seen as a security threat. They don’t want them being turned on Earth

Indeed. Of course, it's more interesting to me that in more enlightened future that some jobs are still regarded poorly. Though, even more interesting is the fact that, as established by Voyager, doing a tour in Starfleet ensured more access to more prestigious positions.
