It doesn't tell me anything about the character or the movie. It could be an ad for Nike products at the end.

idk, shows Ethan's independent and likes a challenge, shows when things get tough he becomes focused, and as the franchise becomes more action oriented establishes him to be very athletic.

I get free climbing but I've never understood how they get back down, I don't really get the "free descent", I think I'd need that helicopter to get me down if I could ever somehow manage to get up there lol.

For me, Mission Impossible is one of the few movie franchises that has actually gotten better as it's gone on.

Yes they have indeed gotten better. But I like all of them. They aren "solid" to varying degrees for me.

Which means jack to the film itself. "Ethan is tough" is not why I watch these films. So, sorry, it doesn't hold up as "Hey, this is exciting. You should keep watching." Because, all I am at the end of it is bored.

^ You said the scene doesn't tell you anything about the character, I laid out my case, feel free to disagree. I guess I can't argue that it didn't tell YOU anything about the character but nonetheless.

I can only go by my feelings on the film. I have no doubt that I could sit down and break it a part and analyze each movement. No doubt the cinematic language will give hints as well.

However, since I approach film in that I am watching this and want to learn something about the character and how that informs them going forward in the film. In that instance, in the moment, it did not resonate for me on a character level. There's nothing there for me to feel like I can grab on to and go, "Yes, I understand this character and wish to see more."

3 was the rest since the majority hated 2. It was necessary, and quite good on its own. It also made the later ones possible, and they are all great.

I basically watch Tom Cruise movies for the stunts. And that was a good stunt, since he actually did that (but with a rope).

3 was more interesting than 2, but when I rewatched it I found it to be very unsatisfying and more than a few holes that I did not like.
And that's the difference-I don't care about stunts. They are good for in the moment "WOW" factor, which is fine for first viewing. After that, more meat is preferred from the characters. MI 2 loves it's stunts...and I don't.

    Not sure if serious...

And if so I just had flash backs to discussions I had in high school with a friend obsessed with Woo and over the top stunts. All I can say is there has got to be a character for me to grab on to for a stunt to sell.

The film has a diverse stable of compelling characters worthy of grabbing on to. Ethan Hunt, Naya Nordoff Hall, Sean Ambrose, Hugh Stamp, John C McCloy. I find your comment about a lack thereof simply astounding

I'm not 100% sure what you're going for. Are you defending the film? Because a "dearth" of compelling characters is literally a "lack of." Which, honestly, would be my feeling. It's easily my least favorite of the franchise, from the style through the score. But everyone's mileage varies.

Or Spock to show up in gravity boots to distract you.
