Btw, I don’t think that the rank of ‘ensign’ existed in TOS and SNW times… but I could be proven wrong. Yeomans…![]()

I have seen it all, but when I was young. I didn’t realise how much I would enjoy it on rewatch though! It’s like watching a totally different TV series for the first time so far.You need to watch more TOS.
Where did I get the idea that ensign was aTNG thing from though?
Yeoman is a billet, or military job. Ensign is an officer rank, the lowest commissioned officer starting in TOS.Btw, I don’t think that the rank of ‘ensign’ existed in TOS and SNW times… but I could be proven wrong. Yeomans…
Of course, there is no better yeoman than “The Yeoman of the Bowmen” (oddly enough, NOT a Navy man).Yeoman is a billet, or military job. Ensign is an officer rank, the lowest commissioned officer starting in TOS.
Yeomen are still used by the US Navy today for administrative and clerical work to ensure the smooth running of different operations.
Enterprise doesn't have an XO for now, so it seems like a logical fit if they find some reason why he needs to transfer to Enterprise temporarilyWhy would Kirk take a demotion, even if temporary?
Kirk doesn't have a ship for the moment...
Oh damn, I totally forgot about that and got mixed up. Thanks, I edited it out.Do we know that? He only lost Farragut in an alternate timeline.
Wasn't Picard a LtCmdr before his promotion to Captain?Picard went from Lieutenant to Captain at the age of 28 and in one disaster.
Captain is both a role and a rank in naval history—one can captain a ship without holding the official rank, even today.
Did we ever get anything saying he went from Lieutenant to Captain ( the rank)? Or is that assumption based on him being a Captain and CO of the Stargazer prior to taking command of the Enterprise? He was described as being a Lieutenant on the Stargazer when the disaster happened that forced him to take command.
They did it in DS9, sometimes, if the writer remembered. I know Dax was called Captain at least once, and Miles how to explain to Nog(?) why.Something STAR TREK has always had trouble differentiating.

No.
There is absolutely nothing in canon/continuity that would preclude Picard first taking permanent command of the Stargazer while still remaining a Lieutenant Commander by rank.
