Screen Rant: It's Possible KIRK Becomes Strange New Worlds' New Number One

And not just Captain's braids on his sleeves but the insignia of a completely different ship, station or Starbase on his breast. That tells me that in the original, unchanged timeline between the tragedy at Tycho IV and TOS that Kirk was either Captain of a Farragut or another ship with a completely different insignia or this is more time travel or alternate reality shenanigans.

I actually think it is the badge Commander Hansen was wearing in “The Quality of Mercy”. Maybe Kirk is commanding some type of facility at this point.

He can be cast as ‘Number One’ As long as he is *never* referred to as Kirk on screen. He can then be played by Paul Wesley and be referred to only as ‘Number One’. This means that people who want him to be Kirk can make the connection to Wesley’s appearance in ‘A Quality of Mercy’ and those who do not want him to be Kirk can pretend that he is not - it could be an example of the same actor being cast in a new role which is different but similar to a previous appearance. It could be a bit like when Robert Duncan McNeil was cast as Nicholas Locarno and then recast as Tom Paris for Voyager, when *obviously* they were intended to be the same character, at least in early stages of story development.

Although, this is confusing since he's wearing captain's strips in the on location pics taken by bystanders. But maybe they'll address that.

In any case, it'd make far more sense to have him be LCDR Kirk, someone who's had at least one small command under his belt. So he's already on his way to captain... since supposedly he rose through the ranks quickly.
With this show's costuming track record regarding rank, anything is possible.

Pike may have ‘fast tracked’ him again? He did this from cadet to Captain in that JJ Abrahams universe, so Lieutenant at 27 to Captain at 32 isn’t much of a stretch.

At least they didn’t meet in a bar this time…
I still want to see Kelvin saltshakers in the prime timeline

Yep. He was an Ensign circa 2250 and then Lieutenant by 2254 and a Captain by 2265. So within 11 years of being a Cadet at the Academy he was a full Captain, and that's speedy by any standard of military promotion outside of wartime.

Just curious.

Kirk managed to go from Ensign to Captain in about 12 years. About half the time it takes in real fife.
Kirk was obviously… ‘gifted’. Why not recognise and reward talent though? I have no problem with this career progression as Kirk is a hero of mine, but it becomes a problem for other people if those equal to or even more deserving/talented were left out and never made the grade beyond ensign on screen… like Harry Kim. If only Kim had a Pike in his life like Kirk did.

Btw, I don’t think that the rank of ‘ensign’ existed in TOS and SNW times… but I could be proven wrong. Yeomans… :guffaw:

*Bite me* :D

Kirk was described as being an Ensign on the U.S.S. Republic at the time of the Ben Finney incident circa 2250.
