This is a good point and one that I think generally eludes the monolithic tendencies of Trek aliens. These aliens may have different morphologies or tendencies or even castes depending on the structure of the society, as well as be impacted by the environment in different ways. Acting like one version of the Gorn is the only version is a bit of a stretch.

This episode was written by Davy Perez, who also wrote Memento Mori, so the same dude wrote both the Gorn episodes. He was mostly known as a writer of Supernatural before this.

There are no Discovery writers on Strange New Worlds, other than Goldsman having written the pilot. Goldsman has made it pretty clear in interviews he has had no role in Discovery since Season 2.

The problem with this thing is that unless they're going to ignore TOS Arena entirely, there's not going to be a payoff. The Fed's not going to go to war with the Gorn because it's not in TOS. Unless La'an beams down to the Gorn homeworld herself, unauthorized by the Federation, and slaughters the Gorn council in the style of Vader on Mustafar or something.

It doesn't need a payoff. That's the whole point of episodic to look at different things and how they might occur but then leave them behind, to jaunt off to the next adventure.

Kurtzman also co-wrote 2 episodes of SNW IIRC.

SNW is getting lambasted more for canon and I will say both shows are in the same in terms of quality. the only difference is kenobi had a high bar to cross because of how well acclaimed The Mandalorian was, while SNW has a low bar to cross because discovery and picard have been meh. also leading up to tos is the part that is far fetched as someone here said, it is hard to know spock is going to throw soup at chapel and ignore her for life while chasing other women in TOS. Even if you disagree you can at least understand that. Though I know how much people want to defend some tv shows as fans that they will try and turn every fault to the opposite.

The ironic thing is the Gorn reproduction process here is completely inconsistent with McCoy's brief mention of it in Star Trek Into Darkness which Kurtzman was also involved in.

Why don't the Borg assimilate the Gorn instead of repeatedly trying to take Earth? Sounds like they have a lot more to offer in terms of "biological distinctiveness" to add to the Collective than the humans, one of the shortest lived and weakest species in the galaxy.

I was bummed to lose Hemmer, but his death gives the show an edge. When Disco started, I thought it might take a GoT approach to its characters — anyone could die at any time. Instead, Disco has gone more traditional Trek, and it no longer feels like the main cast is in any danger. So I was surprised that they offed a main character here (and managed to keep it under wraps until it happened).

    Interesting Bruce Horak interview:

They killed off the sole disabled cast member...

When I was approached to play the part, they told me right off the bat that this was going to be the character arc of Hemmer.

What this reads to me is that CBS wanted the brownie points and accolades of being the first Trek to hire a disabled actor as a main cast member, only for it to be revealed all along they were never going to stick with him for the long run.

He says in the interview he's not done with Star Trek, he'll be back. Read the whole thing next time.

Kurtzman's total writing credits across modern Trek:

    Discovery Season 1
    - Co-story credit with Fuller on The Vulcan Hello
Discovery Season 2 - Co-writing credit with Michelle Paradise and Jenny Lumet on Such Sweet Sorrow 1/2
Discovery Season 3 - Co-writing credit with Michelle Paradise and Jenny Lumet on That Hope is You Part 1 and Far From Home.
Discovery Season 4 - Co-writing credit with Michelle Paradise and Jenny Lumet on Kobyashi Maru.
Picard Season 1 - Co-story credit with Goldsman, Chabon, Beyer, and James Duff on Rememberance
Strange New Worlds Season 1 - Co story credit with Goldsman and Jenny Lumet on Strange New Worlds
Short Treks - Co-writing credit with Jenny Lumet on Runaway, Co-writing credit with Jenny Lumet and Beyer on Children of Mars

What conclusions can we draw from this?
    • Kurtzman never writes for Trek alone. He always writes with Jenny Lumet, and sometimes with another partner.
    • In several cases he has "story credits" - which basically means he helped construct the initial plot scenario and left it to someone else to actually script it.
    • With the exception of Such Sweet Sorrow, all of his credits for full episodes are for season (or show) premiers. Basically he likes to help set up the initial scenarios for shows and then walk away and let someone else implement it. Which is exactly what you'd expect from a producer - it's exactly what Berman did with DS9 and VOY.
    • Even Such Sweet Sorrow could be seen as being DIS Season 3 setup, given they have to go to the future. Much like Children of Mars was actually just setup for PIC Season 1.

I did read it. That's a demotion from main cast. I'm disabled myself. And you're talking down to one of the few disabled posters on here in derogatory terms, on a conversation about the career hit of a disabled actor. ok.

It's okay, they're going to pull a Tasha Yar and recast him as someone else.

Hm you're right, for some reason I thought Goldsman and him co-wrote another.

Nowhere in that post was I being derogatory.

It's too soon to say that, for all we know his returning role is also main cast.

I kinda felt bad for the alien who died. He seemed neat and with the way he was protecting the little girl.
