I'm sure a lot of people felt Uhura was just token symbolism during the Civil Rights Movement and she was just there to look whatever the late '60s equivalent of being "woke" was. Does she do anything important? Then why have her?
. Maybe she should have been replaced by Kyle.

And here we go again: Queer characters need specific narrative purpose to justify their existence as characters, otherwise their inclusion is narratively illegitimate.

To us, that is not a valid reason to exclude us.
Or erase us from the narrative.

I don't care what kind of people they where, they where just useless characters shoehorned in there because of their sexuality! Do you really not see the difference? Including an important character no matter his or her sexuality, I agree with. But including a completely useless character, just because he/she is trans? Just to make a point? Bullshit!

That's a whole different story ... just compare the numbers of black people in the US and trans people in the US, you see the difference?

Is that what happened?

If we're going strictly by numbers the human contingent of the Trek crews should be 36% Chinese and Indian given their combined percentage of the current world population. But then the anti-woke brigade would flip their fucking hooded lids if that were the case.

But aside from the numerical argument, it matters that traditionally marginalized and discriminated against groups have positive representation in media both to serve as a positive example for children of that group to look up to and be inspired by, just as astronaut Mae Jamison and Whoopie Goldberg were inspired by Uhura, and to counter negative stereotypes and discriminatory policies and behaviors against them in the current era.

Right now trans people and LGBTQ people in general are under attack (as they always have been), which means right now more than ever is the time for their representation, regardless of specific population numbers. And the number of LGBTQ people is undoubtedly much higher than reported due to the number that have to conceal their identity lest they face loss of family and friends, loss of work, loss of religious ties, loss of rights, and loss of safety and life, among other things. Trek has been woefully behind the times in depicting LGBTQ characters and stories, and the new shows are finally making an effort to counter that, thankfully.
Please stop insulting me!
I said you used bigoted rhetoric. You did. Cowboy the fuck up and deal with it or take your ball and go home.

Why would the percentage matter? Paraplegics or quadriplegics in wheelchairs are a very small percentage of the overall population but Trek and other entertainment franchises have gone out of their way to spotlight or even include them on a regular basis. If black women were just 0.1% of the American population would that be cheap tokenism and insulting?

Meh

Dr. Aspen was great until the (obvious) reveal. After that she was annoying OTT.

Pike's plot was holding my interest but then they moved to focus to Spock and Peck plays him so dry and one note, I just don't find him interesting. He is the only one of the recast characters who makes me feel like I'm watching a fan film. It feels like he's imitating and this version of Spock doesn't land with me. Nimoy played layers. Even early, younger Spock. This is "I just failed Kholinar" Spock.

Chapel is adorable. One of my favorite characters on the show. I never thought those words would ever come out of my brain.

Sybok!!!!

The mutiny thing was too easy and jokey. The takeover was thrilling and great but the back half of the episode didn't do it justice.

First half was great, second not so much. A disappointment for me.

How many have you seen in Trek, except for Pike and Melora?

Then I don't see how you can make the claim that you do. STAR TREK has always engaged in political commentary ( and no not every episode, but in general, the show has always tried to bring under-represented groups into the Forefront, which does make some people uncomfortable when they see it.)

Strange New Worlds is no different in this regard.

Let people be people. Who the fuck cares! The next Trek could be all aliens and I'd still probably watch. Just let people be people, from all aspects.
