SO, Saturday afternoon I found an opportunity to sit down and watch the S3E1 episode, which was very good. Mrs.Q2 watched part of it and seemed to enjoy it. I asked if she'd like to see a few episodes, which she agreed to, so we started with the pilot, and then another episode, and another... She's hooked (which never happens!) We're up to S1E6 and she's really liking it! Score!

Q2

Well, Mrs.Q2 & I are now firmly into Season 2 now. At the rate we're going through episodes, we should be caught up to Season 3 by the end of the week! She's really enjoying the alternate history aspect and the female storylines too.

Anyone else catch the little NuBSG nod in the first season when Ed says "sometimes you gotta roll the hard six"... Adama would be proud! ;)

They doubled down on season two Danny and that's just not good. It's gonna bring the show down whenever they go back to that storyline. It's like when 24 goes away from Jack Bauer to deal with personal life crap of other characters that only exist to poorly pad out the runtime.

It's bewildering that, with all the great things going for them, they're even in a subsequent season feeding that plot tumor. Man I spend so much time just literally cringing watching this ep. Looks like they're setting it up for drama in that Danny is going to be part of the NASA mission. Let's see..

God... Why bring back the Danny shit... WHY?

Anyway as to the show... I actually wonder if Ellen could bring about the end of the 'two-party system' in the show's universe. In our 1992 you had Clinton vs Bush... but you had Ross Perot as a third party who got the most votes of any third-party Presidential candidate in a very long time.

If Ellen was exposed(or comes out) as gay and is already the Republican nominee that could really shake things up. You could see her win some Democrat/independent voters and likely lose Republican voters (to Perot) although it's possible she could be exposed by this new super-evangelical VP and that leads to a fracture of the Republican Party itself as he runs as the candidate under a new far-right Party.

In the Mars mission stuff... I can't see a lifelong military guy like Ed with the structure fitting in AT ALL in this 'communal/non-title" work environment of Helios lol.

I wonder if this 1994 launch schedule may result in a joint Soviet/USA mission to Mars in order to get them on the 1994 schedule as well. Both are having hiccups even for 1996. It may be they decide working together is in their best interests in order to stop PRIVATE ENTERPRISE from getting their first and worrying about just how much power, money, influence they would lose in their state-run space programs and countries in general if private individuals show they can do the job better and faster than either of them.

Even though we knew it was coming, Ed is now Team Helios. It played out differently how I expected it to but it makes sense Molly would try to undermine Margo, thinking she wouldn't push back. Talk about a miscalculation on her part...but I loved the final shot of the episode with her soaking and smoking and cheering on Ed! Here's hoping she joins Team Helios, too, because more Sonya Walger the better, please!

As much as I like Ellen and Larry (although that bald cap on Nate Corddry is atrocious!), I'm not really that engaged with that plotline right now because it's so tangential with the rest of the plot. But I guess that's part of the set-up for the long-term story since there will undoubtedly be some time jumping (or at least time montaging) in order to get to just the mission launches, let alone the trips and arrivals. I imagine Ellen's choice of an uber-conservative vice president will eventually bite her in the rear...especially when her sexuality will inevitably becomes public and the GOP decides they need to oust her.

The one thing I didn't like about this episode is how, yes, the show is continuing the awful thing between Karen and Danny. I really had hoped they would let it go with just the song at the wedding...but nope! Hopefully with him being Dani's top choice for pilot, we won't see more of it but I doubt it. Ugh.

I thought the same thing when Karen said she thought Ed would be a good fit for them. Um, do you even know him, Karen?

Undoubtedly, the rushed missions for all of three of them is going to cause a lot of issues...and I bet that's going to lead to Margo getting caught communicating Sergei as they both rush to keep up with Helios' planned launch window. But I also wonder if Helios itself will have the capabilities of such an early launch window. I smell tragedy coming up...

It's not as comprehensive as the old Battlestar Galactica insta-commentaries Ron Moore used to do in the good old days at the dawn of podcasting, but like many shows, Apple does have an official post-show podcast for FAM, and the episode that went along with the premiere last week had an interview with Moore, where he talked about the Karen/Danny subplot (33:53 if the timestamp doesn't work) and how he has a bit of an imp of the perverse about that sort of thing, and while it would be hackish and immature to roll over and show your belly every time the audience hates something, his actual problem is fighting the impulse to double-down out of pure spite (hey, I wonder who wrote that Gul Dukat line about "true victory comes when they realize they were wrong to ever oppose you"?).

Annnnyway, Danny's side of it never seemed like the awful part of it to me, it was Karen giving into it that was really uncomfortable (though Krys Marshall joked(?) on Twitter within the last week that she thought it was hot as hell for Karen to live out the middle-aged fantasy of boning a hot college student who worships you). I get the impression, especially with Karen talking about the years of literal stalking we skipped over, that she's not going to make the same mistake twice. Danny, on the other hand, having returned to literal stalking, well, it feels like he might have his place on a Mars mission imperiled by an ill-fated diaper-clad cross-country trip.

Heh, that doesn't surprise me.

Hopefully he doesn't double down too much...

I hadn't realized there was a podcast for this show. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip.

Ronald Moore is gonna triple down on this. Danny is gonna seduce Kelly out of revenge and get her pregnant. Then Ed is gonna seduce Danny's wife and get her pregnant. And then in Season 7, the two babies will be full-grown adults who are the first humans to step foot on Titan where they establish a colony.

I believe to the contrary - this loose structure with short decision times, quick response to problems and staffed by brilliant young people ( with some older folks to provide experience and leadership) is exactly what Ed is missing from engineer led NASA as personified by Margot. I am though extremely sceptical that they can build their ship in 2 years, not without cutting massive corners. Could well be they can't do it and have to wait for the next window which would put all 3 missions at an actual race, much more exciting storywise.

What i don't get though is the reaction of Danielle. Sure he insulted her in the bar but they are both very competitive people, he lost the race at NASA so why is she pissed he took another option?

Margo had her charm in the previous seasons and i liked her storyline but this season she's become a stonecold technocrat and i don't know if i like it too much. I figure her secret will probably blow up this season, especially if the US takes over the lead from the Soviets and it would be an easy task for them to burn her to set back NASA.

Also a bit sad for Almeida that after the initial excitement everybody treats her like she's just in an office downtown. I guess that might motivate her to jump ship to Helios and become part of Ed's crew as the next stage of her quest.

All considered i really liked this, could have done without the Danny plot though.

This show is so good. I really wish it weren’t on Apple TV but on a service with a larger subscriber base so more eyes could get on it and I could wax lyrical about it at the office!

Apple TV is growing pretty rapidly with lots of popular shows including Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Severance, mini-series like The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey and Prehistoric Planet, and reviving Fraggle Rock. Just to name a few.

Maybe you just need better coworkers. :p

The Karen/Danny thing is annoying to be sure. I really hope they let it go. But I’m sure it will culminate in a Ed/Danny showdown at some point. Ain’t no drama on Mars unless it’s love-triangle drama.

The obvious plot for Bragg is that he finds out Ellen's gay and uses it to either blackmail or ouster her. But what if she found out he was gay? That would be quite the dilemma for her if they were at odds about something she thought was important.

Or Bragg finds out Ellen is gay and becomes the third party candidate and the vote is split three ways. Just like it was when Clinton ran against both Bush and Perot in our reality, and like FreezeC77 said above.

There is this shot of what appeared to be two different groups of astronauts standing together in the trailers. The three on the right and def soviets based on the helmets and other shots in the trailers.

I'm guessing all 3 groups make it to Mars at about the same time. The Soviets are in the white suits with red stripes (1,4,6&7) on the shoulder, NASA in the other white suits with red stripes (2,3,5&8) on the pants, and Helios Aerospace in a Blue suit in the bottom picture with the Rover coming out of the container.
