For All Mankind Trailer - Apple TV- SPOILER

Or Bragg finds out Ellen is gay and becomes the third party candidate and the vote is split three ways. Just like it was when Clinton ran against both Bush and Perot in our reality, and like FreezeC77 said above.
I really don't think they're going to get into the weeds of this presidential campaign. Like I alluded earlier, I think the whole purpose of this plot thread is to put Ellen in the position of the presidency in direct relation with Margo and the rest of NASA. And then she'll have issues with Bragg regarding her sexuality. Because, again, there's going to be some rushing of the timeline here if we're to have any kind of real race to Mars, which the journey itself is pretty long.

Or Clinton could get elected and select Ellen as the new director of NASA. Clinton's 3rd Secretary of Defense, William Cohen. was a republican.

Maybe but I seriously doubt Ellen would take that perceived demotion after serving as a senator. Plus it would make that whole storyline rather pointless. Makes much more sense for her to become president.

A nice interview with the producers - and there's going to be a starship at some point!

Now the term starship is by definition a ship that can travel outside the solar system, so there's going to be one ( if they get to do all planned 7 seasons that is). I wonder if it would be a generational ship ( more realistic) or true FTL of some kind ( would be too much Sci Fi on my opinion for this show).

I agree with your larger point, but the current administrator of NASA is a former Senator.

It could be an interesting strategic move by Clinton, letting Ann Richards choose Ellen’s replacement, though in 1993, replacing a moderate Republican with any Democrat wouldn’t be the major victory the way it would be in today’s polarized congress.

My bet would be that the interstellar ship would use some form of nuclear pulse propulsion like the USAF/DARPA/NASA proposed Project Orion. It's entirely feasible to build using existing technology, and with the Moon base in the series or the large space stations to construct it, they have a safe options to launch from without fear of irradiating the populace of the launch or overflight areas.

It would be a nice feature if the series ended on the Russians finally experiencing a delayed Glasnost and eventual non-violent transition of the Soviet Union into a non-totalitarian state and peace with the US (along with China) that led to total nuclear disarmament and then have those nuclear warheads be repurposed to power a joint international US/Russia/China/ESA/JSA/ISRO etc. nuclear pulse propulsion mission to Alpha Centauri or Epsilon Eridani or somewhere else "nearby". They can use the newly developed fusion reactor in the show to provide long term internal power for the crew and systems and use a spinning section like the Polaris Station to provide an artificial gravity habitat section for the crew, while most of the work areas would remain without gravity.

Showrunner Ron Moore already used an Orion-style nuclear pulse propulsion ship named the Phaeton in his excellent (IMO) but not picked up two-hour TV pilot 'Virtuality' in 2009 starring pre-Game of Thrones Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, pre-Westworld Jimmi Simpson, Sienna Guillory and Clea DuVall, so I could see Moore wanting to get a chance to try and depict the concept again.

As you can see it bears some resemblance to the privately-funded Mars spacecraft on the show that uses the Polaris station for spin gravity.

This is the only good video I can find of the pilot (unfortunately the only audio is music), but it show the Phaeton beginning the nuclear pulse launch sequence in space beginning at 2:36:

I had forgotten all about that show. Nice blueprint. SUNSHINE influenced ship design for awhile there, I think.

And, in a few more years, for the moon to get blown out of orbit.

speaking of which I wonder if the current layout of Jamestown is a nod to tto Moonbase Alpha.

also being an alternate 1992, will the Toronto Blue Jays still win the MLB World Series? :)

Of course not. The Montreal Expos will be claiming their third championship.
Nope! It was the Braves getting their second championship in as many years! All because Kirby Puckett and Joe Carter sucked those years.

Yes, still bitter.

Well, the show itself left it ambiguous for now, but the companion podcast all-but-confirms that Margot caved to the KGB. Well, that, and I suppose the fact that they had a Mars rocket in'94 is also pretty compelling evidence.

I liked Dani calling out Ed's stock move of, "A high-stakes, high-pressure space-mission will solve all your intractable personal problems!" To be fair, it worked on Gordo, in the sense that after he went back to the moon, he no longer had personal problems. I question Karen's recruiting abilities now that we're seeing she's mostly collecting unemployable washout second-banana pricks full of toxic masculinity. Okay, Bill mellowed with age and being lapped by two generations of women he condescended to, but while Danny isn't going to have a chance to do a diaper-murder anytime soon, it seems like they're just asking for him to pull a Lennier the second Ed ends up in a place where it'd be very easy to die.

The mention of Dev wanting to include a poet or painter as part of their science crew, and Ed's immediate reaction, reminded me of this quote from a New York Times obituary of Edgar Mitchell that I saw going around Tumblr recently;

In the Apollo years, NASA sent military test pilots into space, not poets or preachers; they came back in possession of extraordinary knowledge that, by dint of personality or professional inclination, they seemed helpless to communicate. As the Gemini and Apollo astronaut Michael Collins once put it, “It was not within our ken to share emotions or to utter extraneous information.” Asked what it was like to go to the moon, Apollo 12’s Pete Conrad replied: “Super! Really enjoyed it!”

(Also of relevance is this reply to the circulating quote about Al Bean's decades-long post-space period spent painting to express unique experiences like "being on the moon.")

In "Carrying the Fire", Michael Collins quotes the poem "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee and says "he wrote that after five minutes in a biplane. What might he have done after orbiting the Earth?" (Paraphrased from memory as I can't find the exact quote in an unindexed book.) Maybe sending a poet to Mars isn't such a bad idea.

  • Charismatic Dev, the space entrepreneur. Can't shake the feeling something is iffy, but it actually would be awesome if that's a red Hering and he has no sinister intentions (and no secret overlord desires and lairs)
  • I can see Molly's reasoning with choosing Ed.
  • Daniele handled it with class, Ed (somewhat) later on understandably not, still doesn't excuse him in the Outpost with Danielle however.
  • Ed getting THE big mission still, albeit as a privateer space captain (not sure he's a good match for such a "company spirit") - still a shoe box of medals and an unhappy life to show for it. I'm predicting him not surviving the season and somehow heroically rescuing the mission, his daughter, Danny or such.
  • Margo's fall from grace coming up eventually, didn't think she'd kick out Molly. WOW!
  • Could have done without the "Karen/Danny" thing brought up/back.
  • WTF for Ellen teaming up with such a candidate, sell your soul/success for the white house office. Her private life situation will blow up in her face I'm sure.

  • big decisions all around at NASA, Helios, "Ros-Cosmos", the white house, the Baldwins, Aleida, Margo
  • Guess the bathtub scene "Way to go Ed" was Molly's last :(
  • Margo's downfall in, one painful puzzle after another (Sergej, blackmail, flight director Bill leaving) - the only "win" for he is Aleida sticking with her
  • Aleida putting job before family (husband, kid, dad), probably kinda regretting or at least thinking about the Helios offer, especially with Bill leaving, still the "moon rock refusal" showed spine.
  • Danny Stevens following his Dad's footsteps, good and bad. Karen's delayed reaction to the announcement was lol. There is gonna be flying fists between Ed and Danny - eventually the cat will be out of the bag somehow.
  • Not sure Ed is really thrilled for Kelly choosing NASA. I'm just happy she's on board. IMO she's gonna find proof of past life on Mars and gonna be the new "Baldwin" main character in the future.
  • No big thing Ellen as the president, don't think she'll last (her actual vs "public" private life, her very differently aligned number 2.
  • 3 horse race is on, all are all in.

can't wait for more :)

Boy… Danny is a real piece if work. His storyline is distracting from an otherwise excellent start for the show.

I'm glad I was right about the impending time jump and there wouldn't be any drama about Ellen becoming president.

...but I really hate what's happened with Margo. I knew this was coming since the season two finale but that didn't make the turn any easier. The KGB crony was right: No matter how Margo justified her actions for purely scientific progress and peace, the FBI would consider her a spy and a traitor. I don't look forward to the truth coming out. Make no mistake, the truth will come out. It's just a matter of when. And when it does, it's going to break Aleida's heart.

Not surprised Karen tried to poach Aleida, nor was I surprised she turned the offer down despite the financial benefits and her husband's complaining. I did like how Aleida kept quiet about her job offer while bidding Bill farewell. She let him have that little victory of self-esteem. I was a little surprised that Kelly aggressively fought for her spot on the NASA mission but it makes sense. More surprising is that Ed actually kept his cool and congratulated her on the move, no matter how disappointed he was. Kudos on him for that.

...but he still has a long way to go. Danny is a complete mess and Ed cannot see it, just like he couldn't with Gordo. Times have changed and Ed doesn't see how alcoholism is a disease and how uncontrollable Danny's toxic behavior will become. On the plus side, with the time jump, we don't have to worry about the awful Danny/Karen thing. Unless we discover that Dev decided it was good to have Karen on the mission. Gods, I hope I'm wrong about that.

The only other surprising thing is I fully expected Molly to get poached, too. I just checked back and Sonya Walger is no longer in the credits. So unless they're now doing the "credit only for episodes she's in" method, I guess that's the last of Molly. Realistically, that makes sense, but damn, I want more Molly!

I thought about that, too, broadly speaking. I do agree it's a good idea to have an artist on such a mission and maybe Dev ultimately won that argument.

IMO she's gonna find proof of past life on Mars and gonna be the new "Baldwin" main character in the future.
I think you're right. She and Aleida are the long-term characters for this show. I'm very curious to see how their stories develop over the decades.

With that in mind, while Aleida is the flight director now, I can't imagine her staying put. Going to just the Moon isn't going to sate her appetite and she'll want to go back out to space again.
