For All Mankind Trailer - Apple TV- SPOILER

Danny Stevens was shown at the beginning of the episode to have already been an astronaut who went to the moon station.

I'm willing to bet they send Ed and Poole on the Mars mission, one in charge of the space portion, one in charge of the ground portion. Ed's to devoted to the space program to leave it for the private sector.

Yup, that, too. I meant to mention that but I got too caught up in his rank.

That intro neatly explains why he was able to expertly spacewalk and navigate shutting down the engine.

Perhaps...unless Margo, Molly, or someone else says or does something that rubs Ed in the wrong was and he quits in act of rage. Not that hard to believe with his history of anger issues.

The look on her face when she realizes the first dance as the new husband and wife is "Don't Be Cruel."

But that was OUR song. How Cruel. :guffaw:

Fantastic way to kick off the season and update all characters into the new storyline.

- the intro was a bit hard to follow, so much information in such a short time

- huh, they finally solved the fusion energy problem and killed the decades old "we're only a decade away" meme ( a bit too convenient but story always trumps realism, even in a show like this)

- not gonna lie, i held my breath at the end when he got whacked by the cable and let out a sigh of relief when he made it

- loved how far Almeida came, she's going to the moon! Especially her father's reaction, who was a janitor at NASA, endured all hardships just so she could get the opportunity to have a better life and then seeing his efforts were not in vain :wah:

- also really liked how they ramped up the G force and it slowly taking effect on the people

This summer will be great TV show wise, all my favorite shows are running full speed ahead and my schedule is nearly full.

Not sure if I'd call it unrealistic exactly. I mean look how many unanticipated breakthroughs the world got out of the US & Soviet space programs (a surprising number occurring totally by accident), and had that continued a pace as it does on the show instead of the massive ramping down of R&D funding and field testing opportunities we got, then who knows what ancillary breakthroughs could have been made of the course of two whole decades post Apollo that could lead to something we're still finding elusive 30 years later?

I watched a freeze framed the opening montage a few things, a couple Alt-History things I spotted

Michael Jordan signed onto Portland instead of Chicago
Margaret Thatcher died in the IRA Brighton hotel bombing in 1984 (the article says the Irish President is Éamon de Valera, which uh doesn't seem right.)
The wide spread adoption of Fusion Energy has slowed global warming
There was Beatles Reunion Tour in the 80s
Gary Hart became president
Donald Trump visited Moscow and met Gorbachev to talk about opening Condos in the Soviet Union (the photo they used was a real photo of the two meeting, except IRL it was in Washington DC)
Mexico elected a communist president. There was a map on the same newspaper that seemed to imply most of Central and South America was communist or at least in the Soviet sphere.
The Soviet Union switched to some sort of hybrid economic model.
England Won the 1986 World Cup Quarter Final match against Argentina

A summer of the Apple TV news segments from user mshaver76 over on alternatehistory.com

1984 - The Rogers Report
The Rogers report looks into the near nuclear disaster at Jamestown. The report finds Soviet gunfire damaged the cooling system and caused the near disaster. There are rumors of a second secret nuclear reactor that was the real cause, but this is dismissed as conspiracy theories. (There really was a second reactor.) Congress calls for sanctions on the Soviet Union for nearly causing the disaster, but President Reagan disagrees. This leads to a US/USSR peace agreement that splits the moon between the two superpowers.

1985 - Internet Accessibility
Tim Berners-Lee calls for the US to open the Internet to the public. The US currently restricts it government computers.

1986 - Global Space Boom
India launches space station, joining a dozen countries, including several European nations, Japan, China, and Turkey. Frequent launches lower overall cost allowing other countries access to space. Polaris Space Tours is founded by Sam Cleveland and Karen Baldwin to provide private access to space. Their spaceplane Polaris 1 should start sending paying customers to low Earth orbit by 1987.

1987 - Clean Nuclear Energy
Dev Ayesa and Richard Hilliard develop first working nuclear fusion reactor. Helium-3 fuel for the reactor is rare on Earth, but NASA announces they found enormous deposits of Helium-3 on the Moon. NASA partners with Helios Aerospace, also founded by Ayesa and Hilliard, to mine the Helium-3. Gorbachev announces Soviet space agency Roscosmos will partner with energy conglomerate Kuragin to mine Helium-3 on the Moon. Kuragin is thriving because of Gorbachev’s hybrid market economy. President Gary Hart calls for acceleration of nuclear fusion and electric vehicles to reduce and eventually eliminate reliance on fossil fuels.

1988 - Mexico’s New President
Mexican Communist Party narrowly wins presidential election with 52% of vote defeating pro-American president. Mexican government will develop close diplomatic ties with the USSR and nationalize banks and businesses deemed critical to national interests. Five years ago, Panama’s Communist Party election win nearly caused a nuclear confrontation between the two superpowers. Since then, the US has taken a more laid back approach to legally elected communist governments, including Nicaragua, El Salvador, Colombia, Turkey, Egypt, and Greece. Communist governments support Gorbachev’s hybrid economic model combining the best of a free enterprise system and a communist broad social safety net. Senator Bob Dole and other Republicans support breaking off diplomatic relations with Mexico, but President Hart does not citing the disastrous Panama response.

1989 - Pathfinder Tragedy
NASA recovers bodies of five moon Marines killed in a training exercise when Pathfinder shuttle unexpectedly depressurized. NASA and the Department of Defense grounds Pathfinder shuttles while cause is investigated. Pathfinder has launched Thomas Paine orbital telescope and Moonlab research station as well as contributing to the rapid expansion of Jamestown. In the meantime, NASA is looking at which missions can be completed with the existing Space Shuttle fleet. Trail Blazers defeat Pistons in NBA championship. Trail Blazer Michael Jordon named MVP.

1990 - North Korean Launch
North Korean rocket explodes again during launch. It’s feared North Korea is developing long range weapons under the cover of its space program. North Korea claims it was a scientific payload to be launched into polar orbit. President Hart urges Soviet Union to pressure North Korea to allow international observers to visit its space headquarters. Soviet Union has provided support to North Korea for its space program and nuclear energy facilities. In 1988, North Korea announced it will abandon its ICBM program in exchange for the lifting of UN sanctions. Instead, it will focus on its space program.

1991 - Kuwait Invasion
Iraq invades Kuwait. President Hart refuses to send troops to help them. He doesn’t see how sending troops would help the situation in a region that has never fully embraced democratic values, good governance, or rule of law. Saudi Arabia denounces Hart’s refusal and fears Iraq will attack them next. Oil prices in OPEC have collapsed because of fusion reactors.

1992 - Presidential Primaries
Vice President Al Gore and Governor Bill Clinton running for President. Al Gore refuses to go negative in campaign against Clinton concerning allegations of improprieties in real estate deals. Senator Bob Dole is Republican front runner. Republican Senator Ellen Wilson is also running. Ross Perot running as an independent.

I wonder if they have electric vehicles in this alternate timeline because as long as vehicles still use oil that's going to mean a huge reliance still on it. If you had started to get hybrids or fully electric vehicles and have cheaper/cleaner energy in fusion reactor plants to supply electricity to the grid to charge those it would certainly account for a huge collapse in oil value.

They do. In the season two premiere, Thomas Paine was driving an electric car, which Ed teased him about. In this episode, Margot was driving a first Generation Toyota Prius (ten years before the real one was released), though all the exterior badging was removed, so it's a little hard to say if it's "really" a hybrid or if it's meant to be an all-electric car. In the real world, Toyota has been surprisingly committed to hybrids and has been dragging their feet on all-electric cars, but there's no easy answer to if that same attitude would've occurred if the history of the electric car was accellerated by 20 or 30 years (and American automakers hadn't gone out of their way to delay them).

Ah, you're right. I forgot about those. I mean it would make sense with more NASA funding, more EV vehicles on the moon, better battery technology, etc...

yep - think it was from the first season with one the big wigs at NASA driving one but the range wasn't brilliant and I also got the impression that Margo's car is electric.
/edit - some beat me to it :p

Found it strange that Margo bought a LP - perhaps CDs haven't taken off there but given how other things have advanced (flat panel monitors about 15 years early or she just likes vinyl).

As for Ellen running in a presidential primary (plus years as gop senator) either she's still deep in the closet and her sexuality hasn't be discovered or their gop is more tolerant of LGBTQ than the one on this Earth).

During the 1992 Presidential Election the issue of gays being banned from the military actually was an issue starting with the Primaries. So I wonder if Ellen's sexual orientation could come out during this either deliberately leaked by another Republican in the primary process (I was mistaken and apparently it's the primaries, she's not the nominee) or if perhaps in response to another Republican talking about gays in the military (or in general) she just finally can not take it anymore and comes out herself.

Definitely the latter based on the conversations from last season. I'm certain that's going to be a major theme in her storyline this season.

well that was one hell of a season start
has been dragging their feet on all-electric cars
indeed for some reason they're still trying to make hydrogen cars a thing even though it'll never be a widespread thing

the season 3 premiere was quite thrilling.

loved that
Aleida gets to go to space and can share it with her former NASA janitor dad
happy so many OG characters are back (could have done and do completely without
Karen
though)

just guessing some character/plot developments:
Ed's injury will lead to his NASA exit, along with their decision to go with Danielle as Mars mission leader. Ed will then go to the private sector.
Danny? (Gordon/Tracy's elder son) is already an astronaut, he'll join the Mars mission.
Ed's daughter in the arctic too (they need scientists on Mars and keep her involved in the story + well ice/water/microbiology is a thing on Mars)
Ellen will run for president, but her private life will become public, fingers crossed it's not a hindrance and she'll become the first female president (longer story arc)
Ellen's gay/bi former? husband will get Aids. (According to the "intro video" the Aids pandemic still happened, also this and Ellen's private life leaking is the only story threads I can see for him.
Margo's Russian romance/info sharing thing will come to head, including her Russian pal having to work for the KGB
Molly's healthy will deteriorate further until the bitter end

I know we have talked about this for past seasons but i still love projecting this show further and comparing it to our reality.

Now season 3 is somewhere roughly in our present with few key differences on the technological side, namely the availability of fusion energy and widespread orbital construction. I'm not sure if fusion is necessary for these stations but it sure helps though i believe we could build such stations if just enough money was available.

This season it's about the race to Mars - Soviets vs USA again but also the US private sector becoming a factor which also mirrors our reality. So apart from fusion and the missing internet we are at the present of our reality.

What would season 4 though entail, where we truly go into Science Fiction terrain? Colonizing Mars and starting the ressource race in the solar system ( mining the Asteroid belt for example)?

I think Europa, Titan, and some of the other Jovian and Saturian moons would be of high interest, too.

Colonizing and maybe even terraforming parts of Mars would be part of the long-term goals of the show.

I think theoretically since they appear to have fusion technology for energy in the show if you look at some next-gen designs they could possibly have some type of fusion based engine that gets to Alpha Centuari in decades. It could be we see a probe launched using that type of engine sometime this season or next season (so 90s/00's in the show) and then maybe we get a signal back from it in the final season with the show ending with a montage showing the first landing on planet outside of our own solar system and establishing a colony since you're not going to spend decades travelling and then come back.
