Lt.Kyle

WE DON'T EVEN KNOW IF IT'S THE SAME KYLE.

Can we contain the anti-masker level Nerdrage until we know for sure? And even then is it worth it?

You are trying to strengthen your point by pulling out that old chestnut.
Sorry, but I'm not pulling out anything.
I'm simply informing you that the way you have worded your posts on this subject, have come across in a manner that suggests another intent.

There's is nothing more to my point, which is quite obvious as this is the first time I've posted in this thread.

(which should also indicate to you that I really don't care about who the Producers pick to play tertiary characters)

Current character rankings (by reply count):
  1. Chapel - 474
  2. Kyle - 342
  3. Uhura - 185
  4. Pike - 155
  5. Hemmer - 107
  6. M'Benga - 100
  7. Ortegas - 96
  8. Spock - 56

  10. Number One - 28

Kyle is currently the second most significant character in the series! He's clearly made an impression on people.

If I were a bigot or racist. I would not be a Star Trek fan

There are plenty of bigots and racists who are also Star Trek fans. I'm not saying you are one, just that being a star trek fan does not exclude one from being a bigot. The negative fan reaction to episodes like 'Rejoined, and how some fans were critical of Tuvok because apparently there were no black vulcans are just a couple of examples of how trek fans are not as enlightened as they claim to be.

You must have missed a lot of fan reactions over the years. Being a Trek fan and being bigoted are most definitely not mutually exclusive.

Of course. But I will bet most are not.
I most certainly am not. People are completely taking things out of context. If someone questions or dislikes a character change like Kyle...all of a sudden we are somehow a bogit.???...smh.
I simply like story and character to be as consistant as possible. Alright?? I get that it has had a lot of errors in the past. But Trek was getting better in that respect until Abrams and his cohorts took over.in 2009. Now its feels like a complete rewrite.

Okay: serious questions.

Worst case scenario: IF this is an ethnic reboot of the John Winston Kyle just because the producers could do it, how does this ruin your enjoyment of the series or specific episodes of it? They've already changed most of the Enterprise and she's no longer an exact match for any version of the TOS Enterprise. But she's supposed to be the same one.

If Kyle is indeed the TOS Kyle and he's now a twentysomething Asian man, how does this affect canon and Star Trek?

Yeah I get that. I dont remember much critical stuff said about Tuvok. Sure him being black was talked about especially in the media but I dont remember anyone disliking it. Same with Janeway being female. Too bad many did not give that show or Enterprise a chance. Both were very enjoyable.

Just for the record AGAIN. I DO NOT completely hate current Trek. There are plenty of elements I like from all three shows. I just wish it would have a consistant tone.

At this point there's still hope that the ship can go through another refit before TOS (they did just swap out all the corridors and put windows around the saucer after all). If they have started to reboot characters entirely while still claiming that this is 100% Prime Universe, then it means they're rewriting TOS. They're saying that there's one timeline, so one or the other HAS to be wrong.

That's pretty much my question here.

But, then I don't adhere to the strict literalism that I often see applied to Trek. I treat TOS far more like a stage play or an in-universe production like Roddenberry intended when he started TOS and kind of retconned some aspects of TOS. So, if something minor is adjusted in SNW (or any other production) I take that as a production change and not an in-universe literal fact.

K...I REALLY had to think hard and look this dude up because I do not remember him at all. We're not talking a major character here and one that only die hard trekkies would be aware of. And as has been pointed out we're not even sure it's the same character.

If this is the same Kyle, what story or character elements would be changed in any of his TOS appearances? Let's face it, the guy was there to push buttons and aye aye. There was no character to speak of.

He could have been merely fleshed out.
