I find Saving Private Ryan an excellent movie. But even I can notice historical inaccuracies during the movie that take me out of it for a moment so it's definitely not perfect.

People interpret it two ways:

1. No Negatives: The work is perfect in every way. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a cinematic masterpiece from beginning to end even if you don't like it.

2. How much you love it: It doesn't matter if the special effects are wonky in Flash Gordon, it is your all time favorite movie.

I don't see how you could give this episode a 10 under either of these criterion, but whatever.

Here's my thoughts on a 10 rating. One, rarely am I rating against a whole franchise. At most I might rate against shows themselves, i.e. a Picard episode against another Picard episode, or a particular era, i.e. 20s Trek. So, an episode will not be compared against older shows.

The other part is that I would consider a 20 if the show engaged me, if I thought it told me the story the author wanted and connected me with characters.

I don't treat a 10 as perfect.

And it's nuances like that that keeps me from using a rating system.

Guinan's age didn't need to be addressed. The character has lived for hundreds of years. Of course a point would come where she would start to age. It's a throwaway line because it's one line of dialogue that's never mentioned again and has no impact or relation to the story at hand. These kind of lines are the things we find in Star Trek novels with writers trying to fix canon inconsistencies with their own ideas. There it's appreciated because it's a 200+ page book, here it's dangling scrapes of sugary foods in front of fans in the hopes that we'll be grateful and not notice that the other 45 minutes of the episode went nowhere.

It's cool that you have your own head cannon regarding how people from her planet age, but clearly the writers went in their own direction. And why would it be mentioned again? We haven't seen 25th century Guinan since then. And even if we do see her next episode, it won't need to mentioned again since it's already been mentioned.

It's weird not to address it? It's weird that Picard fantasized about his elderly French speaking mother for decades but in this series we see multiple flash backs of his mother and none of them have her as elderly or french. That's weird.

Yes it would've been weird not to address it. Since that original scene from TNG is out there, and they chose to go the direction they did with this series, it made sense to address that scene.

Whenever I rate something I compare it against all the other episodes of the same series I've watched recently, all the episodes of any series I've seen recently, a range of episodes from series I haven't seen in ages, and so on. Each time I question whether I enjoyed it more and whether there's something about it that bothered me enough to want to knock a point or two off.

Then after all that I typically give it a 7.

For me the Bond films get rated on the same scale even if they're in different continuities, so Never Say Never Again rating poorly is just as disappointing as, say, Quantum of Solace getting the same or a similar number. OHMSS is a hard 10 and Die Another Day a soft 2 and both for good reasons in my evaluation of each.

Isn't that a bit like saying: If you haven't found a love yet, you have no reason to date at all!?

No.

I think it's stating that if you can't give the highest rating to what you know, you don't have a proper formation of the numbers meaning to be handing them out.

But I admit I would prefer more tens and less nitpicking in ratings. So many people seem to be annoyed when shows get them because they have flaws but are ENJOYED.

Live reactions...

Is that the soundtrack from the Neo/Smith fight in Matrix Revolutions?

Elnor hologram?

PICARD: This gun battle in 2024 with Borg soldiers reminds me of a time in my childhood...

"You haven't had an episode in awhile" WHERE IS MENTAL HEALTH IN THE FUTURE? Like seriously it's the captial of the Federation. She should be getting professional help and not just being vaguely supervised by Gaius Picard.

Oof that knife scene was... ooofy.

Ah shit JL found his Mum hanging, didn't he?

Did Seven just say Janeway resigned?? She's very not resigned in Prodigy.

HoloElnor has a mobile emitter!

Yell louder for the Borg at the back, JL.

Borg fucking up and beaming into walls? Nice.

We all knew this would come down to the ghost of Elnor and the Borg Queen in a sword fight:lol:

Oh shit Seven got stabbed. Not assimilated, apparently Queenie is long over wanting her back.

Jurati is gonna teach the Queen empathy! Lower Decks called it!!

Weird that Seven's implants grew back exactly as they were before.

Yep called it, he found her hanging. Odd this deep trauma isn't something his close friend and therapist of many years ever touched.

Love love love that they've turned the Borg. This is fantastic. It took all of one conversation but still, amazing.

You know, I'm curious about the Soong family. They said that Soong family will go and through to 25th century. Even their youngest one was existed in Picard Season 1. But how the current Soong has only 1 daughter, and she's not even a fully human? So, are those Soong are actually artificial human?
The future Soongs don't have to be direct descendants of this particular Soong, just as Picard isn't a direct descendant of Renee.

It was stated in an earlier episode that Yvette resisted treatment. Which Federation citizens are entitled to do - the right of the individual to choose is a consistent theme in Trek.

Seven said that Janeway threatened to resign, but that Seven herself chose to withdraw from the fight rather than let that happen. So Janeway was not pushed into following through on her threat because Seven decided to pursue another path in life.

It was said in the episode 'Monsters' that she was refusing treatment.

Threatened to resign.

Because people have different opinions than you?

"You haven't had an episode in awhile" WHERE IS MENTAL HEALTH IN THE FUTURE?

Maybe this personal experience is why Captain Picard insisted on having a ships counselor as part of the main bridge crew on the Enterprise D and E? Picard understood that mental health complications can lead to sometimes devastating and traumatic consequences if left un dealt with through a lack of support; trauma not only to the person experiencing the mental health crisis, but also to other people involved in that persons life, in particular family and friends.

Perhaps Picard wanted to make sure that his crew had adequate support both during and after their missions? This could be part of his mother’s legacy…

I wouldn't take the business about the Borg losing in every timeline to mean literally every potential quantum reality...what the line is really about is the pair of timelines that the season is concerned with--the Prime and Confederation timelines.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I found the first half incredibly stupid. A bunch of supposed military elites who can’t hunt down a 90 year old man? What was the point of their green laser sights? They still couldn’t hit anything and it gave away their position.

Elnor as an emergency combat hologram was kinda fun.

I like the concept of Picard’s childhood trauma but it felt out of place in this episode. They should have finished this back in Monsters.

Seven’s self acceptance arc was nice, too bad it was over in the blink of an eye. They should have fleshed this out more given the criminal under utilization of Jeri Ryan and all the low quality filler this season.

I thought the whole spin on taking the Borg in a different direction was a great new twist on an old foe. The Jurati / Borg queen arc continues to be the highlight of the season and this episode did not disappoint in that regard.

I think the green laser sights were meant to be reminiscent of the laser sights from Borg drones, like when Borg drones come out of the darkness and we all see are the Borg laser sights. I think they are the same color. Remember these mercenaries were newly assimilated too. So they were supposed to be Borg drones. Admittedly, the ep probably did not do a great job with this concept. The mercenaries did not really act like Borg drones or show any particular improvement in capabilities from being assimilated.

She refused it.
But she also refused to being locked into her room.
They could at least put a counselor with her into the room - whether she talks with the counselor is on her side, but just locking her away is clearly not in any way helpful for her condition.
