Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

They showed the “first bridge scene” from Strange New Worlds at their Mission: Chicago panel this afternoon, and it was a blast!

Una is off the ship at the time of the first bridge scene, and La’an has been made the acting first officer in Una’s absence. And we see the first meeting of Pike and La’an, and Pike and Uhura

Seeing the short scene, and hearing how excited Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, and Celia R. Gooding were talking about the series makes me more and more eager for the premiere next month.

Trek has so many species with similar-sounding and -spelled names it's a wonder there aren't Homans, Helmans and Hymens.

Wait...

So, one thing I already know that I am going to dislike about this show is how Spock, Uhura, Chapel are the only 3 main characters we see in TOS. And it is obvious in strange new worlds, Spock would have lots of interaction, friendship and maybe even a one off romance thing with at least one of them or maybe both, but somehow when TOS happens. Spock barely interacts with them, instead he, McCoy and Kirk are all stuck together like the 3 Musketeers.

It reminds me of the X-MEN movies, the prequel movies (first class and days of future past) established that Professor Xavier and Mystique were very close, almost like siblings...heck Xavier was even depressed for 10 years when Mystique left, however by the time the original movies came out in the 2000-2006. Xavier and Mystique barely spoke or had scenes together where their past relationship was ever discuss.

Another one example is Ahsoka Tano. A central character in the Clone Wars and an important character in Anakin's life, but she is non existence in the original trilogy. She is not even mentioned in revenge of the sith, which is still in the prequel era.

This kind of inconsistency has always irked me about prequels story and I am guessing we are about to see this in some of the worst ways in strange new worlds, giving the fact that Alex Kurtzman and his team. judging from star trek discovery are not the greatest of writers not to mention just how terrible and poorly characterized Michael Burnham is as a character. The sister Spock never told us about. Also the child who was more important to Sarek than his own biological sons.:vulcan:

Consistent with the characterization of both.
i think there is some logic to Sybok even if we were never told about him. however, michael burnham has always been too far fetched and way too ridiculous for a star trek character.

on the bright side- chapel , uhura and una make some sense here, since we know part of the reason they were almost non existence in tos was racism and sexism.

Michael Burnharm is just an unnecessary character and one of the best example that shows the pitfall of prequels.

Right. Because a previously undisclosed family member from a notoriously private family is the worst.

Uhura and Chapel will be curious to see how they develop.
